Re: Warning: Beware of Office 2003 Service Pack 3

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I thought of that. It's impractical. I have many systems.

2) Since the SP3 can not be removed, uninstall Office 2003 and
re-install but only up to SP2. ( I know, "yikes that s...tinks kj" )

3) Look at and consider the registry mods in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938810/

Already saw those. They don't work.

What are the previous version file formats your clients are having
issue with?

Office XP/2000, but it doesn't really matter. This is a problem with
all pre-2003 versions of Office.

As a service pack, MS support call should be free.

Considering your description, a case could be made for business outage. Are
you a Microsoft Partner?

Thanks. The workarounds do not work.

I'm just looking into this and do not yet have a reliable
"reproducer" sandbox to test in but, failing the KB workarounds,
here's some personal opinion thoughts.

Gary, see this KB for more information and guidance in resolution
or workaround ;

Hi,

Since installing Office 2003 SP3 (which cannot be removed), none
of my clients can open files created with apps from earlier
versions of Office. The error is, "You are attempting to open a
file that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Office.
This file type is blocked from opening in this version by your
registy policy setting." There is no informaton available about
any registry policy setting
to undo this change, and there is no workaround I can find other
than the extremely labor-intensive necessity to create for each
user an "Exempt" directory and manually edit the registry to add
this location. Then the user has to move the file to that
directory before Office apps will open it.
Under the guise of "Security," MS are attempting to force people
to upgrade their Office installs.

There is a new Office SP3 adm group policy file with many new
settings. I was looking at it earlier today and trying to
decipher the intent of some new default values. I had to refocus
on a client issue and was not able to continue, but is it
possible that the new Group policy templates were loaded into
your server? --
