RE: cannot manage remote shares

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

From your description, I know that when you do the following:

1. Open Computer Management.
2. Right click Computer Management and select Connect to another computer.
Input the computer name and then click OK.
3. Click Shared Files/Shares.
4. Right click Shared folder and select Properties, on the Security tab,
"Add?" and Remove buttons are grayed out.

If that's not right, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research on this error, please take the following steps to
narrow down this issue:

Step 1: Please RDP to the remote computer, open the Computer Management and
do the same thing, will the problem be reproduced?

Step 2: Please change the shared folder permissions with TweakUI . The tool
utilizes the modify access permissions for share folder on remote computer.

Please install TweakUI on the remote computer. You can download the tool
from

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Note: Version 2.10 requires Windows XP Service Pack 1 or Windows Server
2003.

1. Open Tweak UI and click Access Control.
2. Select Manage file shares and click Change.
3. Click Add to add the user, then give the full control permission.
4. Click OK.

Note: Please restart the computer and test again.

If the problem persists, please let me know the following for further
research:

1. Screen shot when you see the buttons are grayed out.

2. What important change did you make on remote computer.

Please send the information to v-robeli@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with subject: cannot
manage remote shares.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)

<I used to be able to adjust security settings on shared folders on
