Thanks for the reply Claus.
I should have said this in my first post but there are no backups of this
server. The server is brand new and was installed approx 2 weeks ago by
myself and my colleague. I installed ArcServe and it seemed to be working
fine however the site notified us that the backups weren't running. I was on
holidays last week so my colleague called out to the site. She found that she
couldn't get any backup to work and eventually decided to wait for me to
return. When I did yesterday I saw that ArcServe wasn't seeing the tape drive
in its devices though the tape drive was working fully (listed in device
manager and NT Backup could use it). I tried a repair installation of
ArcServe but that didn't help so I decided I'd uninstall/reinstall and that's
when the situation arose.

Very unusual..
The best option to me seems to do a restore from yesterdays backup.

Hi
I uninstalled ArcServe from a SBS 2003 R2 server yesterday and immediately
after doing so the file associations in the registry got screwed up.
Opening
any file brought up a message saying Windows doesn't recognise the file
type
etc. It did this for all files, .exe .pdf .lnk and so on. I went into the
registry and found that a lot of the keys under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT were
missing, the keys beginning with a dot and the file extension after it to
be
exact.
Also all icons on the desktop were squares with the generic file icon
indicating an unknown file type. The same was present in Administrative
Tools, Control Panel and Start Menu. No "Run" option on the Start Menu
either.
Rebooting with Last Known Good configuration didn't solve the problem. I
was
able to open .exe files by manually adding the .exe and exefile keys to
the
registry but don't want to do that for all the hundreds of missing file
associations, especially as I don't have a full list of the keys that were
previously entered in the registry.
So has anyone come across a situation like this before? I'm not 100%
definite it was uninstalling Arcserve that caused the problem as I find it
hard to believe simply uninstalling a program could cause so much damage
to
the registry. However I have nothing else to explain it.
At the moment it would appear that my only options are to try a repair
installation and failing that a full reinstallation. Any help on this
would
be greatly appreciated.
