For the last month or so I have been having trouble with
the
automatic
SBS backups not running. I have tried several things in
an attempt
to
resolve the problem including the following:
1. Cleaned the tape drive x 5 with brand new cleaning tape
2. Check for new firmware and drivers for tape drive (none
available)
3. Use brand new tapes
4. Clicked on and successfully ran backup from Server Mgmt
using the
"Backup Now" link.
5. Removed the drive from Device Manager and Removable
Storage,
shutdown the Removable Storage service and deleted the RSM
database
file. Then reinstalled drive, RSM DB recreated.
Here is a copy of the typical log file that I get:

The specs on the server are as follows:
Dell PE600SC Server
SBS 2003 SP2
3.5 GB RAM
P4 2.4 GHz w/ HT
VXA-2 SCSI Tape Drive on an Adaptec 29160 Ultra 160 SCSI
Controller.
Someone please help me with this. I have tried to be
thorough and
patient, but I'd like to get the backups working again
without me
manually starting them everyday. Thanks!
Thanks for the reply, Merv. I deleted the scheduled backup
task and re-
ran the SBS Backup Wizard. I'll reply tomorrow with the
results.
Well the backup failed again last night. Any other ideas? Is
there a
way to reinstall the backup component of SBS without trashing
everything else? What gets me about this is that the backups
work
just fine when I run them from the "Backup Now" link in Server
Mgmt or
when I manually load the backup job in NTBackup per your
article.
Here is the log file from last night:

Haven't seen that one yet. Have to go to my lovely trig class now,
but will review later tonight/tomorrow. Thanks for the reply.
I have tried the post regarding deleting shadow devices. I will see
if tonight's backup runs ok
Still no joy :(
This evening I think I might try shutting down the server and
physically uninstalling and reinstalling the drive and the SCSI card.
I really don't know what else to try.
I decided to try something out in the meantime to see if it worked. I
re-ran the SBS Backup Wizard and changed the time of the backup to
11:30 AM (this was BEFORE 11:30). I just checked on it and it started
ok and is in the midst of a backup on the same tape that failed the
last time. I'm not sure what is wrong with 10 PM that I have to set
to normally backup.
The backup that I setup to start automatically this morning at 11:30
completed successfully. I have reset the time for 9 pm tonight and
inserted a new tape. We'll see if it runs ok tonight.
It didn't work, yet again. Here is the log file. It was set to run
at 9 this time instead of 8.
