RE: SQLVDI - ErrorCode=(288)Attempt to release mutex not owned by call

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Hello Joe,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you get SQLVDI error on
your SBS. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let
me know.

Based on my research, this is a known issue on SBS. This problem occurs
because of a race condition. The race condition incorrectly logs the event
in the Application log.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Customer Support
Services to obtain the hotfix KB934396. For a complete list of Microsoft
Customer Support Services telephone numbers and information about support
costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support

Note: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a
specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will
apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for
the specific update in question.

Important: To apply this hotfix, you must have SQL Server 2005 Service Pack
2 installed.

For more information please refer to:

FIX: Error messages and an event may be logged when you use the Virtual
Device Interface in SQL Server 2005 or in SQL Server 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934396

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

Gather MPS network report:

a. Download MPSrepot_network from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe on the server box.

c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
take 10~15 minutes.

d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| I really have to figure this out. Every day there's at least 15 entries
