RE: SBS 2003 Backups failing with error 0X80070458

Hello Vikky,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

From your description, I know that your backup failed and you get error
code 0X80070458. If that's not right, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, 0x80070458 is for ERROR_NO_MEDIA_IN_DRIVE which means
there is no media in drive. Please take the following steps to see if the
problem can be resolved:

Step 1: It seems that the tape drive is not being detected. Please
disconnect and reconnect the tape drive, then try again.

Step 2: The problem may be caused by tape. Please make sure the tape device
is in the HCL list. Also contact the hardware vendor to install the latest
hardware driver.

More info:

Windows Server Catalog of Tested Products
http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/

Step 3: This problem may also occur if your tape drive supports tapes with
different media block sizes. To resolve this, please install the hotfix
below:

"The requested media failed to mount" error message when you try to perform
a backup in Windows SBS 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=831664

Step 4: Removable Storage Manager database possibly corrupted and need to
be repaired. Please rebuild the RSM database using the following steps.

1. Stop the RSM Service.
2. Delete the RSM databases located at %SystemRoot%\System32\NtmsData.
3. Restart the RSM Service, this will recreate new, empty RSM Databases.
4. Put a new tape in, or a tape that may be deleted.
5. Go to the "properties" of the disk inside the physical locations.
Uncheck 'Enable Drive' Hit apply & then check the 'Enable Drive' again
(This was done to reset the Flag since we had renamed the database for RSM)
6. Right click, and prepare.

If the problem persits, please help me collect the following informaton for
further research:

1. Backup log.

Please gather Sbsbackuplog0x.log files which can be located under the
folder "%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs

2. MPS Report

1) Download MPS report tool from:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE
2) Run the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.exe on the server box.
3) Wait for 10~15 minutes.
4) Open Windows explorer, navigate to
%SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\cab\
5) Send the .cab file me.

Please send the information to v-robeli@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with subject:
40410301-SBS 2003 Backups failing with error 0X80070458.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)
