Re: Cannot logoff RWW

Thanks for the input.
I have used RWW successfully before on this server. It is the shutting
process that is giving a problem. Port 443, 444 and 4125 have been forwarded.
If it is a DNS isue, what do I have to look out for ?

Thanks for the virus info. I will give this a try. My gut tells me that it
is the virus that is causing the slowness. What I think is happening is that
when the virus is active/activating the client security is triggered into
doing a scan, which may be the reason.

Hi Jack:

To connect via RDP to your server from outside your lan you must have the
appropriate ports open on the router and forward to the server. Did you try
RWW?

Slow now, but not before? Or always has been slow. Could be DNS issues?.

re the possible virus:

Some will say to flatten and reinstall.... depends on the malware. Short of
that:

I think you are going to have to go on site.

Probably the surest way to clean viruses out of a server drive that has
Exchange running is to shut down the computer and put the drive in another
system or add a known clean bootable device to the SBS and boot clean and
scan the drive while silent.

Bootable USB, Bart PE, CDR, will all work, and if the scanning program and
its virus data base are current it should find the viruses.

Of course this could take a fair amount of preparation, creating a bootable
device that will recognize a RAID array for example.

If you must do it live, you can use Trend Micro's House Call,

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

or better, download their AV engine and current virus pattern.

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/sysclean.asp

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/viruspattern.asp

Download the files into the same folder, unzip them, move all the files into
the same folder, open a cmd prompt navigate to that folder and run the
executable. It will run three passes over your stated or all local drives.

Since you should not scan a working Exchange database, I would probably stop
the exchange store and as many other services as I could and still have a
working system. And, of course, pull the plug on the internet until
finished.

You could also download and install one of the many time limited trials of
this or other products. Trends CSM for SMB is good stuff.

I have used an external PC to log on to the server using MSTSC but this
failed - This computer cannot connect to the remote computer... .The
server's external IP address was used from winXP and Vista.

I have discovered that the server had a W32.RONTOKBRO@mm virus in a client
shared folder. This was cleaned using Client security - antivirus.
The server is gone extremely slow when opening applications / services.
Also
Users accessing the server complained that this access is extermely slow.

Is there an alternate antivirus/adware/spyware program that can be used to
make sure that the server is clean?

Hi Jack,

Thank you for your reply.

For MSTSC, I suggest you type server's public IP address and try to
connect
to it on an external computer.

Regarding the MPS report tool, the link may be divided due to the format.
I
suggest you manually copy the address to IE and try to download it.

In order to avoid confusion and keep track of the troubleshooting, please
check the situation on the internal computers before we go any further.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

| 1. Yes . I cannot log out from all client and server machines when I
connect
| to them via the internet even when a different external PC is used..
| 2.I have not tried running MSTSC from within the network recently. (It
did
| work fine before). As I am off site I connect mainly through RWW. I
will
have
| to test the MSTSC when I get on site.
| 3.This I will have to test when I am on site.
| 4.When the X is selected, the server desktop (when connected to the
| server)freezes.
| 5. The X is the one on the tab that has the IP address of the remote
| PC/server. When this is selected the PC freezes.I cannot shut down the
pc
or
| make other selections.
| 6.I can log out of the RWW page successfully if I do not not logon to a
| client or server.
| However if I select
| Enable files or folders to be transferred between the remote computer
and
| this computer
| before loging onto the server or client, the process fails (page error)
and
| I cannot logon onto the client or server.
| 7.After clicking the x (on the tab that has the IP address), the remote
| client/server does not allow any further selection. The mouse cursor
moves
| but does not allow any selection.
| 8. The two process are the remote pc/server and the Small Business
RWW -
| Windows internet explorer which has to be terminated using
ctrl+alt+del.
| 9. The two links that you have posted is not accessable. I could not
get
to
| the MPS Report tool.
|
| I hope that I given sufficient information to make things more clearer.
