Re: Slow Logins & Performance

Hi,

Well, a router will be better than nothing but it won't suffice as a
hardware firewall because it simply isn't one (it's a router) - which router
make/model do you have ? Are you using a hub or a switch to connect the
server to the workstations ? I believe there are issues with version 10.0 of
the Symantec AV - can you upgrade this to the latest version (I think it's
10.2 but i'm not sure as I don't use this software - check with the Symantec
website) ?

Regards Colin.

Answers to some of the questions

1) I have updated all of the drivers from Dell for the NIC Cards. I
will double check to see if they are the latest. I would have to
assume so though as they were current.
2) My network is set up as described below. No router on the wan side
just the cable modem direct into the external NIC. This is a dynamic
IP from our service provider.
3) Yes I did use ConnectComputer to add the workstations.
4) The ipconfig for the workstation that I listed is the slow one.
5) I have considered changing cables. Some of the workstations
including the slow one are on an older wiring system that I did not
install. There are about 10 workstations and some of them have new
cable runs. However some of the workstations with new cable runs are
still running slow.
6) I do have a router, I didnt think this was necessary, should I use
this for a hardware firewall? I ran the other network for years with
the current setup an no trouble.
7) I did not do a flushdns yet on the slow workstation. That was one
that occurred to me last night but have not been at the workstation
yet to try it. I am working remotely right now and wasnt sure if it
would cut me off so I figured I would try it when I got the chance to
sit at the machine.

Since I am working remotely right now I think some of these
suggestions will have to hold till I get an opportunity to work
directly on the boxes.

I'm curious (following up on Colin's observation)... you say you have cable
broadband and you have 2 NICs in your server. However, I see no router.
This seems unusual as almost all cable setups I've worked with have a router
on the network.

Is this your network setup (see below)?

Cable Modem (not modem-router combination)

External NIC

Internal NIC

Switch

Workstations

Also, did you join the workstations to the new domain using ConnectComputer?

At the workstations, drop to a command prompt and issue the following
command to flush the DNS cache:

ipconfig /flushdns

Hi,

I recently set up a Dell 1900 Poweredge server running sbs2003 std its
running two NICs one for the LAN and the other for our WAN which is a
broadband cable. This was an existing network that we upgraded the
server from a 5 year old Dell which was also running the same sbs2003
std. I needed a bigger machine and wanted to update the hardware. I
have done all the MS updates on the new server including SP2.

Our workstations are all on XP Pro and we kept the exisitng
workstations. In setting up the new server I chose not to migrate the
old domain but rather transfer the users and company share folders
onto the new box by swinging them over using a USB hard drive. I have
cleared out all of the users and logins that referenced the old server
and the new server has a different domain name so I do not believe
this is a factor.

We are running Norton Corporate AV 10.0 which needs to be updated to
the next version but I used it for now.

Anyway everything seems to be working fine except for my overall
performance is very slow on several of our workstations. One in
particular hangs on login, it stops at appyling computer settings and
takes at least 10 minutes to finally login and seems to work fine once
its past the login. My other workstations seem to be hit with random
slowdowns but none of them has the login issues other than the one I
mentioned. If I unplug them from the network they run fine.

I set everything up the same on the new server except for that I
redirected my documents on all users to their share folders in the
server and disabled the offline files setting.

I have tried a number of things but cant seem to nail the problem.

Im sure its a DNS issue but to me everything looks ok. The
workstations NICs are set so the preferred DNS is the server and I can
ping the server with no problems.

I sort of fell into the position of being my companies IT guy and this
is my third sbs2003 set up for our company so I have some good hands
on experience but in this case it seems to be something beyond my
scope.

Ive posted the ipconfig from the server and one of the workstations. I
would appreciate if if someone could take a look at my info and make
some suggestions. Thanks

Bob
