Hello Andrew,
Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.
Before we go further on this issue, please let me know the following to
make the situation more clearly:
1. You said "What I had done is create a folder on the server holding
desired desktop items until I had set the roaming profile up properly. I
put them in the profile folder on the server. " Did you do the following:
1) Configured a sample Vista workstation, then copied the standard user's
profile folder to SBS server.
2) Copy the contents in the folder to \\server-name\Profiles\username.
By default, \\server-name\Profiles\username can only be access by user
himself, how did you copy files?
2. When the vista user log off and log on again, will the last setting
never be saved? Only the you can see the items you copied before?
3. Do the Windows XP clients work well with roaming profile?
For the Vista user profiles name, please read the following:
The user profile namespace used in Windows XP is identical to the one used
in Windows 2000, making interoperability between the operating systems
transparent. However, the significant changes in the Windows Vista profile
namespace create a challenge. These significant changes prevent Windows
Vista from loading user profiles from previous versions of Windows. Also,
previous versions of Windows do not load Windows Vista user profiles.
Therefore, Windows Vista roaming user profiles will add "v2" to the end of
the profile folder. The "v2" is to used isolate Windows Vista roaming user
profiles from roaming user profiles created by previous operating systems.

Based on my research, please take the following steps to narrow down this
issue:
Step 1: Please ensure you fully took the steps in the article below to
configure roaming profile for Vista users:
How to Configure a Roaming User Profile

Step 2: Please logon Vita as domain user, then visit your profile folder
\\server-name\Profiles\username.V2, can you delete the older items
manually? If not, that's related to the NTFS and Share permission, please
have a check:
Profiles Shared folder
NTFS Permissions:
CREATOR OWNER: Full Control (Apply onto: Subfolders and Files Only)
Domain Admins: Full Control
Domain Users: Special - Allow: Traverse Folder/Execute Files, List
Folder/Read Data, Read Attributes, Read Extended Attributes, Create
Folders/Append Data, Read Permissions. (the option to apply the permission
to sub-objects should be checked)
System: Full Control
SBS Folder Operators: Full Control
Share Permissions:
Domain Admins, Domain Users, SBS Folder Operators: Full Control
Username.V2 folder
NTFS Permissions:
Domain Admins: Full Control (Inherited)
System: Full Control (Inherited)
SBS Folder Operators: Full Control (Inherited)
Individual user: Full Control (Not Inherited)
If the problem persists, please help me collect the following information
for further research:
1. Export the Application Event log file and email it to me. To export the
application event log:
1) Click Start -> Run, type EVENTVWR.MSC and click OK.
2) Right click the Application Event, select Save Log File as, save it to
evt file.
3) Email me the file.
Please send the information to v-robeli@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with subject:

I am looking forward to hear from you.
If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Best regards,

<I noticed a problem recently with Vista roaming profiles that i'm having
on
<my domain. When I initially setup the Vista machine, took a bit of messing
<around to get the system to log on and off properly without errors and
save
<things such as desktop background, gadgets etc. What I had done is create
a
<folder on the server holding desired desktop items until I had set the
<roaming profile up properly. I put them in the profile folder on the
server.
<I noticed that if I deleted certain items off the desktop, they would
<re-appear next time I logged in. I realised it was only the files I had
<initially copied manually that were reappearing.
<
<The profile is stated as being a roaming profile and it's status is
roaming.
<It is evident that when I log off, profile files and folders are not
<synchronised at all and the machine is using both a local copy of the
profile
<and anything residing in the roaming profile folder on the server. As for
my
<XP machines on the domain, each user folder has the user as the owner of
the
<folder with full control privilages. One other thing to note is that the
<account used on the Vista machine has it's profile folder defined as
<\\server-name\Profiles\username but Vista creates a folder called
<\\server-name\Profiles\username.V2 which doesn't occur on the XP machines.
<When logging on and off there are no visual warnings or anything shown in
the
<administrative logs of the Vista machine to indicate that there were
issues
<saving or loading the profile from the domain controller.
<
<I'm running SBS R2 with the latest updates and was wondering what I have
<neglected to do in terms of configuration specifically for Vista machines.
<Any advice would be great thanks :o)
