RE: NT Backup Started but error occurs at night

Hello Colin,

There is a update for you.

From your backup log, we can see you backup your D drive to F drive. Does
the F drive is a Removable Storage?

Based on my further research, I suggest we try the following steps to see
if we can resolve this issue:

I. Please first install the following hotfix 817688:

817688 "Error on a Request to Write Data to Media" Error Message When You
Use
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=817688

As this hotfix is included in the Windows Server 2003 SP1, I would like to
confirm that you have the SBS SP1 package installed.

On the SBS server, click Start, click Run, type "regedit" (without the
quotation marks) and click OK. Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer, and check the
data of the registry value ServicePackNumber. Is it set to "1"? If not,
then this problem will occur because SBS 2003 SP1 has not been completely
installed. To successfully install SBS 2003 SP1, we must install all five
updates listed below. Additionally, the updates must be installed in the
sequence listed.

Downloading and Installing Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1
http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/0/f/e0fee8ce-768d-41c0-8871-9bc48e0
b3fc3/ToDownLoadFilesandReadInstructions.htm

A. Service Pack 1 for the Windows Server 2003 operating system
B. Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
C. Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
E. Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment
F. Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1

After you applied the whole SBS 2003 SP1, please run CEICW

II. Please also install the following VSS hot fixes:

Update is available that fixes various Volume Shadow Copy Service issues in
Windows Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;891957

III. I suggest you open a command prompt and do a chkdsk against the d
drive and F drive:

CHKDSK d: /f
CHKDSK f: /f

IV. Please try to backup SBS to local hard disk. Do you get the same error?

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

Gather MPS network report:

a. Download MPSrepot_network from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe on the server box.

c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
take 10~15 minutes.

d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| | Hello Colin,
| |
| | Thank you for reply.
| |
| | From the backup log I find the following error:
| | ==================
| | Error: The device reported an error on a request to write data to media.
| | Error reported: Invalid command.
| | There may be a hardware or media problem.
| | Please check the system event log for relevant failures.
| | The operation was ended.
| | Backup completed on 8/22/2007 at 4:25 AM.

| | Files: 224493
| | Bytes: 101,862,359,662
| | Time: 4 hours, 10 minutes, and 15 seconds
| |
| | Error: D: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access.
| | ==================
| |
| | This issue may occur if the Removable Storage service is stopped and
then
| | restarted during the backup job.
| |
| | In Windows Server 2003, the Backup tool works with the Removable
Storage
| | service. If you stop the Removable Storage service during a backup job,
| you
| | may close a communication handle that links the Backup tool and the
| | Removable Storage service. If the Backup tool subsequently makes calls
to
| | the Removable Storage service, these calls may fail. If the calls fail,
| the
| | Backup tool stops the backup job and may generate an error.
Additionally,
| | the Removable Storage service may mark the media side (partition) as
| | unrecognizable and label the media name as an integer.
| |
| | What is D: partition refer to in your system? Is it a removable storage
| | (USB drive)? From the backup log, we can see, it is a long backup time
(4
| | hours), please ensure the drive is available during the time.
| |
| | I suggest you try to backup to local hard disk to test. Do you get the
| same
| | error?
| |
| | If you still get the error, please try to install the following hotfix:
| |
| | "Error on a Request to Write Data to Media" error message when you use
| | Ntbackup.exe
| | http://support.microsoft.com/?id=817688
| |
| | I hope these steps will give you some help.
