Hi,
I've never used CounterSpy but believe it has a good reputation. I'd
personally recommend you try Webroot SpySweeper or you could even download a
30 day trial of F-Secure Anti Virus 2007 - has a good anti spyware component
and will also scan for Root Kits. Sophos will also give you a free Root Kit
scanner. I'd forget the free software - I've used them and then run a paid
for product over the same machine and found Trojans. Not good.
Regards Colin.

Serious question... if there is an answer I hope you will share. <g>
Other than not connecting to the internet, how do you keep every little
piece of "malware" off your system? I see stuff caught by Adaware and
Spybot et al all the time. On any computer connected to the internet.
Surely you don't mean to reformat, or as you suggested earlier in another
thread, replace the storage subsystem every time a tracking cookie or double
click sends down a "spybot"?
Or do you?
And if some are allowable and some are not, how to choose?
cleaning. I might delouse one of my own computers, as it's my own risk,
but not anyone else's.
It is possible to stay clean, but I wouldn't expect a computer user to
do so. I ran 98 for at least three years without AV without picking up
anything. I've still never triggered an AV alert on my own machine. I've
done a couple of system restores to sort out family members' mishaps.
I have deloused (probably) a seriously infected machine (AdAware turned
up over 500 problems) out of curiosity, but it took longer than a
rebuild, which I did afterwards anyway. A business machine doesn't
usually have much software installed, while rebuilding a typical home
machine is a nightmare.
Cookies are another matter, and I allow harmless ones to persist between
browser sessions. Anything related to purchasing gets wiped when the
browser closes. AdAware picks up MRU lists, which I don't consider a
problem. Spybot tells me I've turned off MS 'you don't have this'
alerts, which I already know.
And mostly, I'm afraid I don't use Windows at home much.
