Re: Linksys PrintServer on SBS domain

I just tried to ping it and it timed out.
The printserver has never been used. But I have had it around for awhile
and thought I would try it out. Maybe we will just plug the printer into a
computer and share it from there. It's not going to get that much use.
Thanks for the replies.

That sounds like there might be something wrong with the print server.
itself. I'd be willing to blame the network connection, but it seems like
that test page feature should work regardless of anything else, even if the
print server were not connected to the network. You could try power cycling
the print server to see if that resets whatever's wrong - I have a couple of
HP USB print servers where I have to do that once a year or so for some
unexplained reason.
Can you ping the print server from the SBS using the IP you see in DHCP?
I'm not 100% sure they reply to pings, but the HPs do.

I think you probably answered this correctly. I have been having trouble
getting into the configuration for the Linksys printserver. It shows up
in
the DHCP and I tried to connect with my browser, but it's not working. I
don't see the printserver on the network, but then I haven't tried it from
the server.
You said I could set a reservation IP from DHCP. I missed that yesterday
and will try that. Then see if I can see it from the server instead of a
remote connection. Anyway, I am supposed to be able to print a test page
from the printserver that would tell me the IP address. But that is not
working as the Linksys website explains it.
I hope to get back to it again tomorrow.
Thanks.

This should be fairly easy. If you open DHCP on the SBS, you should be
able
to find the print server on the list of leases. Then use IE to browse to
that IP address, which should bring up the web interface for the print
server. If you run into any problem with this, you might have to read
the
Linksys manual to figure out how to get into its configuration screens.
Once you can connect to the Linksys, you should be able to either give it
a
fixed IP, or use DHCP to set a reservation. Either way, don't let it
continue to get its IP from DHCP.
Then go to the SBS and go to Printers and Faxes -> File -> Server
Properties. On the Ports tab, and a tcp/ip printer port using the IP
address
you assigned the Linksys. Then run the Add Printer wizard to add the
printer as you normally would, as a local printer and selecting the
tcp/ip
port you just created. Open the printer's properties and go to the
Sharing
tab. Share the printer and choose the option to show it in the
directory.
Add the drivers for the client operating systems you use.

Is it possible to set up an HP laserjet desktop printer with USB,
connected
to a Linksys PrintServer on a SBS domain? How would I go about setting
it
up? I have everything hard connected to the network, but as I figured,
we
can't see the printer. I am new to working with SBS and the network,
but
have set it up myself so far.
We have 10 computers running WinXP Pro on our SBS network. Mostly
using
SBS
for a file server and exchange.
