Re: APC UPS

Re thinking this.

To eliminate any chance that window would be corrupted:

If you have a floppy drive in that server, set it to boot from floppy. You
could have it sit there looking for a boot disk, or boot from a win9x or dos
floppy. All the devices that use power will still be running, but windows
will not be. Then turn off the power at the circuit breaker or power tap.

Hi:

Lots of bad things can happen if SBS is shutdown before all the services
are stopped. That is why a controlled shutdown takes as long as it does.
But the good news is that the bad things "seldom" happen. We just try to
avoid this, cause when they happen they are a PITA.

If you want to test your battery life, try this. Start in Safe Mode.
There will be few services running. Stop all the exchange and SQL
services that did start. Stop anything else you wish.

Then, to avoid breaking the ground, which is never a good idea, turn off
the circuit breaker to your UPS., or pre position a surge protector or
power tap ahead of the UPS and use the off switch on that device.

Watch how long the server stays up.

Many thanks for such prompt advices.

It is latest powerchute, what makes me worry is it shows a 'risk
assessment'
warning on the 'Application Shutdown'

Help files say

"
When a shutdown commences, the following occurs:

After its configured delay time, any specified command file is executed.
After their individually configured delay times, any selected
applications
are shut down.

After its configured delay time, the OS begins to shut down.

After the duration for shutting down the OS expires, the UPS continues
its
countdown before turning itself off.

Notes:
You can only configure applications if you have PowerChute Deluxe and a
smart-signaling UPS.
SQL can only be shut down when it is run as a Windows service.

Applications include:

Microsoft® IIS® (Internet Information Server)
Microsoft® SQL ServerTM
Microsoft® Exchange
IBM® Lotus® Notes®/ DominoTMSiebelTM
"

It is set to allow 10mins on the OS so I hope that is enough!

We use APC Smart UPS with our SBS2003 and have installed the
powerchute software that came with it.

I am unclear whether or not this will in fact shut the server down
safely (and am scared to test!)

APC appear to imply you need to pay more for a deluxe software
version that supports shutdown of applications (eg IIS, Exchange
etc.), but I'm reluctant to do this if it is not necessary for SBS,
or if the same thing can be achieved using the facility to run a
simple cmd script before shutdown kicks in.

I've read here that SBS can be shutdown using shutdown /s command, is
this effectively what the UPS does? In this case presumably
everything finishes in an orderly manner.

However I have also read elsewhere that the UPS may stop the OS
without regard to other applications and exchange etc need stopping
first. If so, is there any reason to pay for the deluxe version
rather than create our own file to stop the various exchange services
etc first.

Any advice or comments will be much appreciated.

I use PowerChute Basic Edition (and I'd recommend you download the
latest
version from www.apc.com) and it works fine, with no additional stuff.
I've
never needed the Exchange plugin (and what in IIS would care, I don't
know!).

If you need to, you could probably have it run a batch file before
shutdown
....

net stop msexchangesa /y

....and then proceed.
