Sean,
You didn't have to add a separate IP so you can use port 80. You could have WSS 3.0 using port 80 using a host header. As far as getting prompted or username and password, go to the 'Properties' page of the site, 'Directory Security' tab and click 'Edit' under 'Authentication and access control'. Make sure that the 'Integrated Windows Authentication' checkbox is checked..
The request for user id and password from the application that opens a document, is something that you can't avoid the first time a document opens up. It's the security measures from the application, not the site itself. After the first time it won't ask you again within the same session.
Did you setup 'Alternate access mappings' for the application in order for the external users to be able to access it?

We are having a couple of sharepoint issues on our SBS.
1) I installed WSS3 so that we could take advantage of all the new
functionality. It wasn't adequate to put on a different port from
port 80 (companyweb on port 80) so I ended up binding another IP
address to the NIC and configured the new sharepoint site to that IP.
Works great except for the fact now we always get prompted for
username/password whereas companyweb automatically logged us in based
on our AD credentials. Is there any fix for this?? Another note, not
only does it ask as for a username/password to get into SharePoint but
it also asks us for password again when you try to open any document.
Very frustrating since we are already authenticated!
2) We have some outside consultants that we give access to our new
SharePoint site via username/password. For several of these clients
now they simply get an "Access Denied" screen. At first I thought
they were mis-entering username and password but some of them are
never even prompted for a username and password. As soon as they type
in the address it just comes up with "Access Denied". Others have no
problems. Any one seen this before? A security/firewall setting on
the other end is the only thing I can think of.
Thanks,
Sean
