I had a very similar problem years ago with one of my clients when we
tried to move an ISA 2000 to ISA 2004 (via SBS 2003 SP1). Since the
upgrade was related to the SP1, I called PSS -- a good move.
Turned out that the server had been hacked and was preventing the
upgrade. Found a service that was running under a spurious, but
official sounding login (like Admin). Don't remember what the service
was, but it was near the top of the list alphabetically and sounded very
much like a real service except that there was a small spelling error in it.
This probably didn't happen to you but, just in case it did, I would
look down the list of running services and see if there are any that
don't look correct. Sometimes the spelling is very close, like Micrsoft
or DCHP, so look carefully.

Thanks very much for the continued advice guys.
Charles - do I really need port 25 open? Sorry if that's a stupid
question. I don't believe Exchange is relaying through SMTP (unless
this is the default configuration). Actually, I don't even know what
ports Exchange requires to be open...
Actually having checked the firewall I see we have ports 25, 1723,
3389, 21 and 5555 open and SBS tells me that Exchange does indeed need
25. Annoyingly the wizard won't let me block the FTP port which is a
shame as we don't use FTP.
I'm not sure I fully understand what firewall is actually running.
It's configured through the "Configure internet connection" wizard on
the task list. I know it's not the standard Windows/ICS firewall as
that is not available to me in network connections.
I will work on the hardware firewall but it may take a while....
This morning I only have four failing logons for user "Company".
However SQL reports 1,8881 failed logon attempts for the user "admin"
from a foreign IP address.
Thanks also JM. Based on your comments I have installed Windows
Defender and will run a full scan. I don't see anything obviously
wrong but as you note it can be difficult to spot.
I am hesitant to open a case with PSS on the ISA issue... We have a
slightly nonstandard configuration (e.g. registry tweaks to allows RPC
over HTTPS on a single exchange server, things like that). It's not
the first time I've had problems installing software on SBS (CRM in
particular was a nightmare).
Many thanks again, Richard- Hide quoted text -

I have also now reduced the surface area on SQL which hopefully will
help!
