RE: SBS Backup Errors

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

From your post, I understand that after installing the latest updates, SBS
backup does not work. If I have misunderstood your concern, please feel
free to correct me.

If the issue is urgent to your business, it is recommended that you contact
Microsoft Customer Support Services (CSS) via telephone so that a dedicated
Support Professional can assist you recover the server in a more efficient
manner. Please be advised that contacting phone support will be a charged
call.

For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Support Services phone numbers
and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web
site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[LN];CNTACTMS

According to the error message and event id, this issue can be related to
VSS component.

Let's try following steps to see if it helps:

Suggestion 1: Re-register VSS files
=================
1. Stop the Volume Shadow Copy service: Open a command prompt and change
directories to \WINDOWS\system32 (this is important when you begin
registering the DLLs):

net stop vss

2. Then register the following DLLs and services (be sure you're still in
the WINDOWS\system32 directory at your command prompt):

regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc /Register
regsvr32 /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll

Start the Volume Shadow Copy service by running "net start vss".

Suggestion 2: Install the latest VSS component:
============================
I would like to confirm what service pack has been installed on the SBS
server.

I suggest you install following update to see if it helps:

Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b6f8a4c0-b707-4161-
adeb-44f1b756119f&DisplayLang=en

Windows Server 2003 may not start when the Volume Shadow Copy Service is
enabled
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931312/en-us

NOTE: Although KB931312 does not match the issue you are encountering, it
can update the VSS component to the latest version.

Suggestion 3: Prepare a Clean Boot environment.
=================
1. Click Start and Click Run, and in the "Open" line, type in "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks) and click OK.
2. Under the Service tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services", and then
click "Disable All" button. In this way, we can disable all the services
which belong to third-party programs.
3. Under the Startup tab, click "Disable All" button.

4. Click OK.
5. Choose Yes to restart the computer.
6. Check "Don't show this message or launch the system configuration
utility when Windows starts".
7. Please check if the issue persists in the clean boot environment.

NOTE: We can check on Normal Startup in the General tab to roll back to
Normal Mode after we get this issue resolved.

I hope the above information is helpful to you. However, if the issue
persists, please help me gather following information:

1. If you use NTbackup instead of SBS backup, what is the result?
2. What updates were installed before the issue occurred?
3. What device do you backup to? Hard disk drive or tape drive?

4. Backup Logs.

a. The Backupxx.log files in the folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\SBS
Backup User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
NT\NTBackup\data'.

Or 'C:\Documents and Settings\CurrentUserName\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data'

b. The Sbsbackuplog0x.log files which can be located under the folder
'%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs'.

5. Please download the MPS Report tool from the following link and run it
on the SBS server, then send the generated CAB file to my mailbox
v-mzhuan@xxxxxxxxxxxxx for further investigation so that we can find what
the root cause is:

concern, please feel free to let me know.
