Sorry Owen, whilst your post gives some support for Microsoft I am of the
opposite at the moment. That help and support issue was reported back in
March.
Why didn't Microsoft fix it by putting the command line fix in the
executable. ?
You mention site may have 'pre-existing' errors, well brand new server
install and striaght away windows update wants to install SP2, help and
support broke..huh!
Took it on site and not one XP SP2 would join the domain (connectcomputer
and manually) some RPC error... Uninstall SP2 join domain easily.
New SBS is coming out to help 'novices' install on their own, anyone buying
SBS now is gonna have a nightmare (novice) oh but they might not cos they
wont do updates...lol
BTW it was premium with 2 NICS

I have been waiting for it to be "safe" to install service pack 2, but
still
see a lot of cautionary notes about installing it. My question is
related to
the process Microsoft follows when issuing these service packs. After
the
initial problems are reported, wouldn't they issue an updated service
pack to
address those issues? It would seem by now, almost three months later
that
the issues would be resolved, and the service pack safe to install.
Thanks
for any insight.
Microsoft is not likely to change the SP itself, but they have updated
the SBS-specific information in the Knowlegebase concerning how to
minimize installation problems and deal with those which may occur,
notably:
Best practices and known issues when you install Windows Server 2003
Service Pack 2 on a Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939421
Windows 2003 service pack 2 known issues on Small Business Server 2003

Speaking only for myself, my own and my clients' servers have all been
updated to SP2 for several months. Both single- and dual-NIC servers
were updated but none of them runs ISA. The only issue I ran into (on
one server) was the broken Help & Support which was easily fixed. Some
other folks have obviously had more trying experiences, so your mileage
may vary.
There has been some speculation that SP2 may "reveal" pre-existing
underlying problems in some cases rather than actually causing them.
General advice would be to verify that your network and SBS are running
well BEFORE attempting the update. For example, carefully check your
event logs and correct error conditions.
