Hi Jon,
Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.
I am sorry for the delay due to the weekend.
Since on SBS 2003 you can create one Recovery Storage Group, please try the
following to see if you can move the problematic mailbox from a Recovery
Storage Group
Note: Before this task, please backup your system first.
1. Create an RSG
2.Add the mailbox store you wish to work with to the RSG
3. Perform the restore, once the restore is successfully in place in the
RSG and is mounted , open ADSIEdit.
4. In ADSIEdit, browse to the Mailbox store of the RSG
itself:
CN=Mailbox Store, CN=Recovery Storage
Group,CN=InformationStore,CN=SBSSERVER,CN=Servers,CN=First
administratrative group,CN=Administrative
Groups,CN=Domain,CN=Microsoft
Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=Domain,DC=Local
5. Get the properties of the mailbox store within the RSG (don't get the
properties on the RSG itself or the production store or storage group as
this will have a different effect)
6. Alter the msExchRestore attribute from "True" to "Not Set".
7. Once this is set, refresh your Exchange System Manager (ESM) and you
should see that when you right click on a mailbox in the restored store--it
has the same options as a normal mailbox does.
8. Depending on the scenario, first, you could create a new account without
a mailbox and use the reconnect in the ESM on the
mailbox in the RSG to make the mailbox accessable via Outlook. Another
option is to enable "View/Advanced Features" in Active Directory Users and
Computers (A-DUC) and in exchange tasks, remove mail attributes. Then
reconnect to the actual user.
You then can purge the object in the production store and perform a move
mailbox from the RSG store to the Prodution store.
9.Once you're done with the RSG and have gotten the missing mail/data out,
remember to remove the RSG store and RSG as is the best practice.
Hope this helps.
If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Best regards,
Robert Li(MSFT)

< SBS 2003 SP2.
<
<Long story short, a user was deleted and his mailbox was purged.
<Mistake. I got the messages back because we have a brick-level backup
<for that, but we want the contacts and task list and calendar too.
<
<I recovered the mailboxes from ntbackup to a recovery storage
<group and I see the mailbox, but of course exmerge won't display it
<because the original mailbox is gone. And Exchange Tasks won't merge
<it back in because the original mailbox is gone. So I am trying to
<follow the instructions for "How to Recover a Purged Mailbox from an
<Online Backup Using the Original Database Server" in "Using Microsoft
<Exchange Server 2003 Recovery Storage Groups"
<(http://tinyurl.com/2vqp4u). But to do that I need to create a new
<storage group ... and when I try I am informed that the system has the
<maximum number of storage groups !!
<
<Arrgggh! Am I screwed?? Help?? Please??
