Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

From your post, I understand that neither SP1 nor SP2 can be installed on
the SBS server. It said file not found when attempting to install SBS SP1.
If I have misunderstood your concern, please feel free to correct me.

For this issue, please try following steps to isolate the root cause of the
problem.

Step 1: Prepare a Clean Boot environment.
=================
1. Click Start and Click Run, and in the "Open" line, type in "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks) and click OK.
2. Under the Service tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services", and then
click "Disable All" button. In this way, we can disable all the services
which belong to third-party programs.
3. Under the Startup tab, click "Disable All" button.

4. Click OK.
5. Choose Yes to restart the computer.
6. Check "Don't show this message or launch the system configuration
utility when Windows starts".
7. Please check if the issue persists.

NOTE: We can check on Normal Startup in the General tab to roll back to
Normal Mode after we get this issue resolved.

Step 2: Re-download SBS SP1
=================
Please re-download SBS SP1 to local disk and try to install it in the clean
boot environment.

If the issue persists, I would like to confirm following information:

1. Have you successfully installed the following updates before SBS 2003
SP1 KB 885918 by following the instruction described on the SP1 download
page?

a) Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
b) Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
c) Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
d) Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment

Downloading and Installing Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1
http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/0/f/e0fee8ce-768d-41c0-8871-9bc48e0
b3fc3/ToDownLoadFilesandReadInstructions.htm

Please let me know which update fails to install. Is Windows 2003 Service
Pack 1 or SBS Service Pack 1?

2. Did you logon as the built-in Administrator account? If not, please do
it and test the issue again. If yes, please double-check the
Administrator's membership. The administrator account should *only* have
memberships in the following groups. If they're not there, add them; if
there're any not-listed groups there, temporarily delete them:

a) Administrators
b) Domain Admins
c) Domain Users
d) Enterprise Admins
e) Group Policy Creator Owners
f) Mobile Users
g) Schema Adminis
h) Internet users [if ISA server is installed]

[Important] Administrator account should *not* have membership in Mobile
Users or Power Users.

3. Please let me know whether you have any additional domain controllers in
your SBS domain (even remnants). If you have remnants of a DC that no
longer exists then you may just need to do the metadata cleanup (How to
remove data in Active Directory after an unsuccessful domain controller
demotion - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498). If you have another DC,
simply go to AD Sites and Services and expand out
Sites/Default-First-Site-Name/Servers/servername/NTDS Settings and then
right click on the connection object and select Replicate Now. Do this for
each DC in the domain.

4. If the problem persists, I recommend you to perform the following steps
to make sure that the Administrator and System account have full control
permission on registry and the system partition.

a) Download and install SubInACL from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e8ba3e56-d8fe-4a91-
93cf-ed6985e3927b&displaylang=en

b) Create a file named reset.cmd in C:\Program Files\Windows Resource
Kits\Tools folder.
c) Edit the reset.cmd file with the following content.

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

d) Enter into CMD prompt and enter the following commands one at a time and
click Enter.

cd\
cd "C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
reset.cmd

e) After a few minutes by processing subinacl, please test the problem
again.

5. If the problem persists, please help me to collect the following info
and send them to v-mzhuan@xxxxxxxxxxxxx for further research.

Info 1. Screenshot
=============
Please help me capture screenshots of all error messages you encountered
and send them to v-mzhuan@xxxxxxxxxxxxx so that I can make a further
research.

To capture the image, we can perform the steps below:

(a) When the error message appears, press the Print Screen key several
times (this key is located to the right of the F12 key on the keyboard)

(b) Open Paint ['start' => 'All Programs' => 'Accessories' => 'Paint'].

(c) Click Edit (menu) -> Paste or press Ctrl + V.

(d) Click File (menu) -> Save. Save it as a .jpg or .gif file and send it
to me as an attachment.

Info 2. Logs.
===========
a) SharePoint Services Service Pack 1 log -
%temp%\Ohotfix\OHotfix(0000x).log and OHotfix(0000x)_Msi.log.
b) Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1 (Q885918) log -
C:\Windows\KB885918.log.
c) Please zip the entire C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows
Small Business Server 2003\Logs folder.
d) Send above files to me.

Info 3. MPS Report.
==============
a) Please download the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE from the following link and
then run this tool to gather some information from the problematic computer:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE

b) Double-click on the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE file.
[Note] This process may take some time; however, it will not have a
negative effect on the performance.

c) A CAB file will be generated in the
%systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\Cab directory called
%COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports.CAB. The CAB file will contain the reports
generated by the MPS Reporting Tool.

I hope the above info helps and I look forward to your update.

Best regards,

Manfred Zhuang(MSFT)

| A client tried to apply SP2 to his machine, it kept failing. Eventually
