Hi Dan,
Many thanks for your update.
The security group SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser$Computername shall be
created during SQL Server setup. After some research, I found that there're
a couple of cases mentioned that the group did not create successfully
which caused the problem. I suspect that the problem may caused by security
permission.
You can refer to the SQL Server 2005 Readme and installation requirements
for info about the group.

Thank you for sharing your experience in the newsgroup, and we look forward
to working with you again.
Sincerely,
Bill

The solution was very well hidden.
The CSS support person, who was very dogged and helpful found this:
* Found a similar case in which this failed also. Resolved by creating a
new Group called "SQLServer2005SQLBrowserUser$servername" and adding the
Domain Administrator account to this group.
* From this point the install completes successfully.
We added the security group in the AD and the install completed
am
That seems really bizarre to me. That is, the install process *should*
check for the existence of the group, and, if not present, create it. I
wondering if the check was made, and a false positive was given because ofhttps://sftasia.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=3473efd8-9b1d-498d
the earlier unsuccessful un-install.
