Re: server blocking access to ftp site

Larry, I have tried all of the information recommended by Terence Liu on the
link you gave to me and none were successful. Therefore I figured it would
be good to give responses to each of the questions he asked at the end based
on whether or not the recommendations resolved the issue....

1. When does this issue begin to happen?

This was only brought to my attention a few weeks ago. I had not tried
installing anything major prior to the issue arising, only after in attempts
that a security update or service pack would repair the issue.

2. Can you access the FTP site from SBS?

Yes, FTP sites are able to be accessed by the server.

3. Can you access other FTP sites from internal client, like
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/?

No, any FTP site that I've tried to connect to fail to connect to the
server.

4. Does this issue happen on all internal clients?

Yes, all clients are denied access to any external ftp site.

5. Do you have any evidence that the source IP address of the FTP packet is
the internal IP address of the LAN client? Please capture screenshots on
the error messages you get at command line and send the pictures to me at
v-ter...@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Since I'm posting on the newsgroup instead of e-mailing anybody, I will
leave the contents of the error message instead of a screen shot:

This is the error I get when I try to access via Start>Run

"FTP Folder Error:

Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed the file name
correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.

Details:

The connection with the server was reset."

Further, if I try to access via internet explorer, this is the error message
I receive when I run the network diagnostic:

HTTP, HTTPS, FTP Diagnostic
HTTP, HTTPS, FTP connectivity

warn FTP (Passive): Error 12031 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com:
The connection with the server was reset
warn FTP (Active): Error 12031 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com:
The connection with the server was reset
info HTTP: Successfully connected to www.microsoft.com.
info HTTPS: Successfully connected to www.microsoft.com.
error Could not make an FTP connection.

Note: I get the same page and error message on all internal clients and like
I said in my original post, FTP port 21 is open on the software firewall on
the client computers as well as the RRAS firewall on the server. I'm at a
loss. Any other help you could give would be most appreciated!

Thank you for your time

-Kenkcj
