I am having major problems getting a Freecom (Sony) tape drive to
operate properly. The latest drivers have been installed for the Sony
AIT 80GB IDE drive and similarly Windows SBS 2003 has been fully
updated. Using Yosemite backup software (supplied with the tape
drive) I am getting a data transfer rate of only 1MB / sec, and it is
taking a large percentage of processor usage during the writing
process. The Server is doing nothing else at the time of writing to
the tape - I have disconnected all the other network devices. The
suppliers of the tape drive have given me a new drive with exactly the
same results, and have advised that they believe it to be a SBS
issue. Replacement new Sony tapes make no difference.
So my question is - does anyone know of any known compatibility issues
with SBS 2003 and a Sony AIT drive or does anyone have any ideas what
else could be causing this problem. Thanks in advance.
Does it have its own dedicated card? Yes, you state it is an IDE card
that you could attach to any port on the motherboard but try a
dedicated ide card. When I used to do a lot of scsi tape decks often
it was mentioned a dedicated controller card would offer better
performance. That said I remember how horrid the Travan IDE tape
drives were. It could have been Travan.
We currently are delivering Quantum V4 dlt tape drives. I have
installed them as USB, SCSI and SATA. They all seem to work pretty
fast. Well I think the USB was not as fast as the SATA and SCSI but I
have not quantified that.
