Re: Licencing for remote access

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

What Steve said. And another option is to buy 3-4 low cost desktops (maybe
without monitors) and set them up in the office so that the remote users can
use Remote Web Workplace (RWW0 to remote control them (similar to a TS
session). If your not going to grow much bigger in the near future, this
may be a viable solution. While having everthing on a TS server can be more
efficient to administer, having multiple desktops for RWW access may be easy
(and less of a learning curve).

Whoa . . . . . Confused again!

Does that mean that alongside the existing server I should buy seperate
server and buy 5 Additional SBS CALS and 5 TS CALS? If I was starting
from
scratch again would I need two servers just to get 3 or four remote users?

Who said this was easy?

To clarify you will add a 2nd server (keeping the SBS) to use as a TS? If
so
your SBS CALs will cover the 2nd server except for the TS remote access.
You'll need additional TS CALs for that. With a total of 3 internal and
potentially 4 external you will need 7 SBS CALs-you do have to buy in 5
packs so you'll need 1 5 pack for that.

Thanks Merv for the quick reply - now I understand why my techie has
been
telling me dingos kidneys.
No the remote users do not have any workstations in the office - they
stay
remote.

It looks like our only answer is load our new server with Server 2003
with
Terminal Server (P73-02766) - would that be right?

I Can't find out how many remote users can have access - is it 5?
There
are
currently 3 in the office and 2 remote but soon to be 3 in office and 3
or
4
remote so I assume Server 2003 plus additional CALs - would these be
user,
device or TS CALS?

Sorry for the hastle but gotta learn somehow.
TIA

Do the remote users have dedicated workstations in the office?

Do you mean that the users are coming into the SBS server via a Remote
Desktop session and that they have accounts that are domsin admins on
the
server (so that they are "remote controlling" the server itself)? If
so,
only 2 concurrent "remote administration" sessions are allowed because
the
SBS 2003 server can only be used in Remote Administration Mode via
Terminal
Services (it cannot be used in TS "Application" mode). And allowing
users
direct remote control over your SBS server is a recipe for disaster.
So,
for more than 2 concurrent sessions, you would need to add a Terminal
Server
and licensing to your network.

If your current remote users are using Remote Web Workplace (RWW) to
access
their office workstations (and the program onhte SBS server), and you
only
need to add 2 more, your original 5 CALs that came with SBS 2003
should
cover them for remote access as long as you have defined 4 of the 5
CALs
to
be "User" CALs.

Sorry this might not be the right place to ask but . . .
SBS 2003 R2 with 5 CALS - currently two users are running program on
Server
using remote desktop. Now need to add a third and possibly later a
fourth
remote user. What licence do I need to buy to make this work? I
have
been
told too many different things ranging in price from £300 to £2000 -
MS
pre
sales guy said just add 5 Device CALS but that does not work. What
do
I
need
to buy? If someone has the part number of the licence we need that
would
be
excellent!

Thanks
