RE: SBS 2003 R2 - Please Help

Hello John,

Thank you for posting here. Thanks for Susan's inputs.

According to your description, I understand that your network and client
computers be slow after you install the full SBS 2003 R2 components. If I
have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

First I want to explain that this is a performance issue. It is hardware to
troubleshoot in newsgroup and our troubleshooting maybe time-consuming. So
if you would like to call CSS for assistance, I would be appreciate and
think it is a more effective ways. To obtain the phone numbers for specific
technology request please take a look at the web site listed below.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;PHONENUMBERS

If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for
regional support phone numbers.

However I will do my best to be of assistance if you still want to continue
here.

Based on my research, log on slow is probably refer to incorrect DNS
settings on the clients. The SBS server internal IP address should be used
as the DNS server on the clients rather than the ISP DNS servers. The SBS
server can then forward DNS requests to the ISP DNS servers for Internet
access.

So I suggest you to re-run the CEICW wizard to configure internet access.
For more information, please refer to the following information.

825763 How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server
2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763

The DHCP service will be configured automatically after you run CEICW. The
default scope option of DHCP service is as followings after running CEICW.

003 Router SBS internal NIC IP (if you
have 2 NIC installed on SBS server)
006 DNS Servers SBS internal NIC IP
015 DNS Domain Name Your Domain Name
044 WINS/NBNS Servers SBS internal NIC IP
046 WINS/NBT Node Type 0x8

You could check the following settings to confirm network configuration.

On SBS server:

External NIC:
IP: assigned by your ISP or your hardware router
Gateway: your ISP or your Hardware router IP
DNS: SBS INTERNAL NIC IP as the only entry

Internal NIC:
IP: Fixed IP
Gateway: None
DNS: SBS INTERNAL NIC IP as the only entry

In the DNS console (dnsmgmt.msc), right click your ServerName and click
properties. In the Forwarders tab, your ISP DNS server IP should be
inputted there.

On workstation:

IP: Assigned by DHCP on SBS
Gateway: SBS internal NIC IP
DNS: SBS INTERNAL NIC IP as the only entry

Then try to log on clients again, is it fine?
Note: By the way, try to test your Exchange issue.

If you install the Windows 2003 sp2 on the SBS, please perform the
following steps:

1. Disable the RSS support from the TCP/IP stack by doing the following:

Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry
incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These
problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at
your own risk.
To work around this problem, disable Receive Side Scaling when the computer
is configured as an Internet Connection Sharing gateway. To do this, follow
these steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.

b. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

c. On the Edit menu, point to New, click DWORD Value, and then type
EnableRSS .

d. Double-click EnableRSS, type 0 , and then click OK.

e. Exit Registry Editor.

2. Disable Offloading support:

a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

b. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

c. In the right pane, make sure that the DisableTaskOffload registry entry
exists. If this entry does not exist, follow these steps to add the entry:

On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value, and then type
DisableTaskOffload .

d. Double-Click DisableTaskOffload, type 1, and then click OK.

e. Exit Registry Editor.

(Reboot to make both changes effective)

3. Updating the NIC drivers to the latest version resolved the problem. So,
make sure you have the latest version for your Network Card drivers. Most
manufacturers have released updated drivers very recently.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
kindly help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Gather MPS network report on the good SBS 2003 R2 and bad SBS 2003 R2:

a. Download MPSrepot_network from
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE

b. Run MPSRPT_NETWORK.exe on the server box.

c. The tool will automatically collect the information. This procedure will
take 10~15 minutes.

d. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder:
%SystemRoot%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\Cab\

e. Send the .cab file directly to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| Hi All,
|
| We have the following particular problem after installing SBS R2
| components.
|
| We have about 10 IBM x3500/x236 servers in a production environment, when
we
| installed the first with the full R2 components we found the network to
be
| slow, the server work fine the Pc's start slowly and operate slowly on
the
| network, particularly Outlook etc. So much so, the 35 users complained
that
| it was slower than the old 5-year server!
|
| Since then some of the servers were installed without the R2 components
| because of this reason (with the exception of exchange sp2) they work
fine.
| Some of the servers were pre-imaged with R2 already they are slow. By the
| way all Pc's, Servers had all MS fixes installed to no avail.
|
| It's a weird problem, as it is erratic and appears to effect local Pc
apps.
|
| We have been installing SBS since 4.0, so we have a bit of experience and
| have done everything by the book and know some of the main problems, DNS,
| SMB etc.
|
| The only real difference that we can find in these installations is SBS
R2.
|
| Can anyone suggest what we can do to resolve this and is anyone else
having
| this problem?
|
|
