pppoe and two nics

I've just moved a server from 2000, where I used RASPPPoE, to SBS-2003. I
had understood that 2003 has a preference for two physical nics, so I've
provided that, but the Internet connection is a Verizon PPPoE dialup.
I believe I've seen advice to use a router in this situation, but I'm not
sure I like that idea--adds complexity, and ISA will be doing the work of
keeping things safe anyway.
Anyway--the question is what addressing I should be using on that second
nic, which is effectively connected to nothing--nothing that distributes IP
addresses, anyway.
For the moment, I have it left on APIPA, but I think this may be hurting me
on the DNS side of things.
