Re: SBS 2003 domain.local vs .com for Exchange

Folks,

Many of you have been very helpful to me as I configure and work
toward moving to Exchange, so I appreciate that. However I have
another question. When I set up my domain it defaulted to everything
(servers, domain, computers, users) having the default of
server.domain.local for the names.

Well - your AD domain name in DNS is, domain.local.
Your server's FQDN is server.domain.local
Your workstations are <workstationname>.domain.local

All this is normal/good.

Looking at examples for
configuring Exchange, things need to be in the format of
server.domain.com. In particular, looking at an often reference
article as part of my prep, entitled "Hosting your own SMTP mail
using Exchange 2000" (even though I'm doing Exchange 2003),

It's the same thing. But since you're using SBS - don't manually do any of
this; just use that tutorial as a guideline to see how this all works.
Instead, you should run the CEICW to configure everything. It's very
straightforward.

in ESM |
Recipients | Recipient Policies | Default Policy |E-mail address tab,
the default SMTP rule is @domain.local and the example in the
document says it should be @domain.com. This is easy enough to
add/edit, but am I going to need to find all reference to this for
the exchange server and users and edit accordingly, or will this be
a problem at all?
Later in the article in the default SMTP Virtual Server Properties |
Advanced Delivery option, the FQDN is mail.domain.com, and mine says
server.domain.local. There is an option to "check DNS" and when I do
that, it says it's valid, but will I need to change that for Exchange?
I assume that I can name my Exchange server for the purposes of
Exchange when I run the CEICW wizard before migrating to
mail.domain.com, but do I need to coordinate these references
beforehand?
Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike
