Re: New SBS2003 Server - Old sbs2000 Server

The client is in the new domain, which uses a .local extension instead of
the .com of the previous domain.
The new domain is exactly that. I was never comfortable with the way the
old server was setup. They had been thru several IT guys since the server
was sold to them before I got the contract in Nov 05.
They only have 11 users and most of those do not use their email. It is
mostly files to be moved. They do not use SQL or SharePoint. All of this
lent to my decision to go with a brand new domain. Just had to save that
aged accounting system.
I very well may have used the wrong terminology with "pass-thru". I
expected to have to the have the accounting users type logins that would be
valid in the old domain to access the share, since they are no longer
members of the old domain. Since this did not occur, if figured the client
was passing the logon thru to the old domain, and used the term "pass-thru".
Thanks for the help

hi Jeff,
I happy to hear that it's working for you.
But since your feedback mentioned about passthru, I've concerend that
you may not understand what's occurring.
Just so that you understand, the PC clients are either joined to old or
new
domain at any one moment. You mentioned client setup so I believe
computer accts are created in the new SBS. At the login screen are
users connecting to old or new SBS domain?
I'm also unclear whether it's a new SBS build or a migration (sounds like
former).
You are right, SBS boxes don't support trusts and don't see each other
except at the IP level. As you've found, a solution would be to create
shares and map the shares and save the share (non-AD) password if
you need security. Seems to work for the accounting apps I've seen.

This is what I did.
I deployed a Linksys Router with a WAN static IP in the old SBS system
address space. I deployed the new SBS server behind this router, with
the router as the gateway to the old network, with a static LAN IP
Address. This provides Internet access as well.
I then defined the IP address of the old server in the DNS of the new SBS
server. I took an accounting client out of the old SBS domain, ran the
client setup for the new domain. Mapped the old accounting share to the
same drive letter as before, and the accounting program runs just fine.
No modifications were made to the old server. I set username and
passwords the same for the accounting users in both domains, and the old
SBS server even pass-thru authenticates and the users do not even need to
log on to the old server. Since SBS does not support trusts I thought
that the user would need to log onto the old server.
When the old account system is done being used, I will change the LAN
address of the Cisco firewall to replace the Linksys router, and all
should be well.
Thanks for all the help.
