Re: New SBS2003 Server - Old sbs2000 Server

This is what I will do, except I have to save the functioning accounting
system on the old server for a few months in the new domain. Since I cannot
re-install the old accounting database engine(lost discs b4 I got the
account), I have to salvage this functioning accounting system for a few
months.

My main problem is how do I get this server which is now a SBS server, to be
a member server in my new domain. I am buying a copy of Win2003 Server for
the machine anyway, and I can install it however I need to make the change
work.

Posts in this group tell me I do not have license to demote the SBS server
and use the server product to be a member server in my new SBS domain even
if this could be done.

So I guess my question is this, if I upgrade the old SBS server to
winServer2003, can I demote the WinServer2003, and then join it to the new
SBS domain as a member server, keeping the accounting system functioning.
Has anyone had to do this?

11 user accounts you don't have much to migrate. You can simply recreate
those user accounts, security groups and exmerge the exchange mailboxes.
Copy any data you want to restore to the new SBS 2003 server. Backup and
export any SQL databases as well as Sharepoint databases.

Build your new SBS 2003 server and bring it online. Recreate and restore
the above mentioned as well as install any applications. You don't have to
worry about any W2K3 server licenses as SBS will be doing the
authentication. Just make sure you have ample SBS CALS. Reformat the old
SBS 2000 server, install W2K3 server and use the SBS server wizard to join
it to the new SBS 2003 domain.

This way you have a clean, updated fresh install.

One of my clients just bought a new server and SBS2003. They are
presently
running sbs2000 on a server that is fast running out of space on the
system
partition. The system partition is only 4 gigs. The system has 11
users.

The client is transitioning to new accounting software on the new server,
but they would like to run the accounting systems side by side for a few

I have a plan for migration of all the applications used except for the

memeber
server. Join the old server to the new domain as a member server while
both
accounting systems are run. When totally on the new accounting system, I
was going to wipe the old server clean and install a copy of Win2003
Server
and bring this machine on line as a member server. --- But reading the
posts on here, it became obvious I do not have license for this method,
even
if I could get it work

2) Upgrade the SBS2000 Server to Windows Server 2003. I assume that this
would leave the Win2003 Server as the FSMO,GC and DC for the old
SBSDomain.
Then I could do my DCPromo to demote the server, and join it to the new
domain as a member server. Is this scenario possible? The 4 gig C
partition on the old SBS server only has 200 Megs Free. Will
Win2003Server
install in that much space? The size of that partition was the impetus
for
the re-Format.

Any help would be appreciated.
