RE: Information Store Recovery

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Thank you so much for the reply -

I followed the steps outlined in your message pretty closely:

dismounted the store, moved files from MDBData folder, replaced with backup
from NTBackup...

When attempting to mount the store, it failed.

That is when I used the eseutil and the /r, /d, and /g parameters.

At this point the store would mount and all looked successful. The
appropriate number of messages appeared to be in the mailboxes.

Within a few minutes, a duplicate address appeared for each entry, same
email address, but with a count of nearly 0 messages for each.

I then thought, if I run the cleanup on the store, the duplicates might get
cleaned up. The original, and apparently correct mailboxes were then all
marked with the red x, indicating they are to be purged. That is not really
what I want, that will leave me with no messages in the store for any of the
users. I actually would like to keep those marked with the red x, not the
empty version.

I have no idea what may have gone wrong. I will continue looking and look
into the exmerge application as well.

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

From your post, I understand that after recovering the information store
from the back up files, there are two entries for each use. After running
cleanup agent, the entries you want are marked with a red x. If I have
misunderstood your concern, please feel free to correct me.

Before we start, I would like to confirm that how you backed up the
information store before? NTbackup? SBSbackup? Or using some third party
backup tools?

If you used recovery storage groups in Exchange 2003, I suggest you refer
to following article to restore the data:

How to use Recovery Storage Groups in Exchange Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824126/

If you only backed up the files, I suggest you perform following steps to
restore the information store again and check if the issue persists:

Step 1: Dismount the database
===================
a. Start Exchange System Manager.
b. Expand Servers, and then expand YourServerName and the storage group.

c. Right-click Mailbox Store, and then click Dismount Store.
d. Click Yes when you are prompted to continue.

e. Right-click Mailbox Store, and then click Properties.
f. Click the Database tab, and then click to select the This database can
be overwritten by a restore check box.

g. Click OK.
h. Quit Exchange System Manager.

Step 2: Clear the MDBDATA folder
====================
Please move all the files in MDBDATA folder to another folder.

Step 3: Restore the database from the backup files.
======================
Please restore all the files backed up from the MDBDATA folder before to
the MDBDATA folder.

Step 4: Mount the database
===================
a. Start Exchange System Manager.
b. Expand Administrative Groups, and then expand AdministrativeGroupName.
c. Expand Servers, expand YourServerName, and then expand
YourStorageGroupName.
d. Right-click Mailbox Store, and then click Mount Store.
e. Click OK when you receive the message that indicates that the store
successfully mounted.

In Exchange, we recommend using exmerge.exe to backup the signle mailbox.
To do so, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=823176

For more information regarding exmerge, see:

I hope the above information is helpful. If the issue persists, please
download and run the setup MPS report tool on the SBS 2003 server.

a. Visit
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.exe to download the file.
b. Run the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.exe on the server box.
c. Wait for 10~15 minutes.
d. Open Windows explorer, navigate to
%SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\cab
e. Send the .cab file to my mailbox: v-mzhuan@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
