Re: new SBS install -- cannot see external network

Have you done this manually or with the "Connect to the Internet" Wizard. If
you have not done it with the wizard, I would do so. That is how SBS insures
a proper configuration. I would also recommend dual NIC's in the server too.
Go to:

Start
Server Management
Select "Internet and E-mail" from the left column
Click on "Connect to the Internet", follow the prompts.

I have built a new machine and installed SBS 2003 R2. I've tried to
connect to my network which uses a dlink router connected to a comcast
cable modem. The dlink provides DHCP, firewall and printer services. I
don't want to change any of that or connect PC's to the new SBS server, I
just want to connect that server to the network so I can download patches
and software to prepare to move to another location.

I tried setting up the network on the SBS server using DHCP and it could
not see the DHCP server on the dlink router. I then tried to setup a
static IP and configure manually on the SBS. This appears to succeed, but
I cannot see the DNS servers configured from comcast. I've verified that
the subnet mask, gateway, DNS and other settings are similar to those on
other PC's running XP and Vista that I have connected to that dlink
router.

I am thinking that SBS doesn't want to be connected in this manner.

Is there some way to get this machine to act just like another PC for a
while so I can get connected to the network?

Some details if this helps...

* On the dlink, I've insured that the mac filter includes the mac address
of the new SBS server nic
* On the dlink, I've reserved the IP address (192.168.0.122) for the new
server to use-- this insures that the address is free to be used.
* On the SBS server, I've configured the local lan TCP settings to be:
IP: 196.168.0.122
mask: 255.255.255.0
gw: 192.168.0.1 - that's the dlink
dns1: 68.87.76.178 -- comcast dns server
dns2: 68.87.78.130 -- comcast dns 2 server

Settings like these work elsewhere--

Thanks in advance for any advice.
