Re: Restoring and Image File

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Have you tried re-running the CEICW and then reinstalling GFI..
This is a bit odd

I don't use GFI but I've typically heard good things about them.
But Henry is correct, internal mail and external mail is all going via SMTP...its all about how it routes it.

If you go to AD Properties for your account and go to email addresses
Do you have a .local and a .com address??

Hello Chris,

Yes, when I uninstall (or stop the GFI services) all returns to normal (with the exception of hundreds of spam mails!). However, the GFI support person tells me that our Exchange setup is wrong and that SMTP is handling all of our internal e-mail - hence the problem. Hence my thought to do a quick 20 minute image restore to see what, if anything, has changed.

Richard

Richard,
Have you tried uninstalling GFI to see if things "return to normal"?

Hi Marina - Thanks for the feedback.

I appreciate that the C drive changes, but I'm figuring that restoring to a
known good state would be OK. As I see it, the only think I would then need
to update is Exchange (as all of our other data is on a different server
accessible from mapped drives).

The problem I have is that GFI Mail Essentials is intercepting our internal
e-mail and refusing to pass it through to the end users. I've spoken to GFI
and they seem to think that the problem is with Exchange. All I know is
that when the GFI services are stopped all is well and when they're
restarted the problems re-appear.

My knowledge is pitifully low, but GFI seem to think that Exchange is
sending the internal mail via SMTP.

Moving onto our disaster recover method, what would you advise? Our
strategy has always been to backup our volatile data each night and if the
worst happened we would re-install SBS from scratch (bearing in mind it
would probably be on different hardware) and restore the data.

I, perhaps foolishly, though that an image of Drive C would save a lot of
time when restoring to exactly the same hardware, with a Backup Exec restore
of the Exchange data.

Even if I did a full tape backup of Drive C & D each night, the Exchange
data could be several hours out of date if I had to restore back wouldn't
it? With this in mind, would there be very much difference in restoring 5
hours worth of Exchange data as opposed to 5 weeks?

Richard
