Re: SBS on Rack mount servers

Alex,

I ran into that comment several months ago. The following comments are
directed at Dell, not at you, just to be clear.

Someone please tell Dell that they are complete IDIOTS for that comment.

Do they somehow think that the operating system can detect if the server is
sitting on the floor vs. being mounted in a rack? Friggin' dumb sh..s! What
if I take a PE 2800 and buy a rack kit for it, or I buy a shelf for a PE
830, then put it into a rack? Does Dell think it will fail to boot or what?
Gee, maybe the mercury switch on the motherboard can sense that it is now
lying on its side!!!

SBS was designed for small BUSINESSES, not physically small SERVERS,
regardless of the server's installation orientation.

It is just Dell's dumb-a.. marketing at work.

To my knowledge, Microsoft has never made such a completely STUPID comment.
My one-man business at home has a rack with six computers in it (SBS, web,
workstation, three for lab), four routers, two switches, and a patch panel.
Heck, I've got more than any of my clients! By the way, the SBS and
workstation are in rack-mount cases...and they work just dandy!

For the security conscious, the web server is on its own firewall and static
IP address, not on my LAN!

OK, I am done venting about Dell's ***ABSOLUTE STUPIDITY*** on this one.
Well, now I am done.

Hi we run SBS2003 R2 on a Dell rack mount Server. Talking to a Dell
server technician, he commented that SBS was designed for small company
networks using tower servers (infering that small businesses may not wish
to implment a rack mount solution), and that Microsoft dont recommend that
SBS2003 is installed on a rack mount server.

I found this strange and wondered if it was correct and if so, why?

Thanks

Alex
