Hi Terence,
Many thanks for your quick response.
I’ve gone through the things you suggested:
1. MSSQL$SBSMONITORING is started.
2. I went to IIS. In default website properties on the website tab I went
to Advanced next to IP Address. I had the following settings under IP
Address and TCP Port:
Default 80
127.0.0.1 80
192.168.100.2 80
217.41.28.26 80
None of them had anything under the host header value. I didn’t want to
delete anything from this area as I don’t know enough about it.
3. I opened inetmgr. Double clicked the server name. Clicked ‘Web Sites’.
Double clicked Default Web Site. There is no folder (virtual directory)
called Monitoring. There is also no folder called Backup. Please let me
know the best way to create them.
As I got this far and hit a problem I didn’t look through any of your other
suggestions. I’d be grateful for any help you can provide.
Best Regards,
Sam

Hello Sam,.
Thank you for posting here.
According to your description, I understand that the Monitoring & Reporting
and Backup info in server management do not work. If I have misunderstood
the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:
1. Open services.msc and check if the MSSQL$SBSMONITORING service is
started. If it is stopped, open it, make sure its startup type is set as
"Automatic", go to "Log on" and make sure it is using the "Local System
account". Then start the service and check if everything is OK.
2. Make sure no host header is assigned to the Default Web Site. When you
look at the IIS, Default Website, WebSite tab, Advanced. You should have
"Default" as the IP address, 80 and the TCP port, nothing for the Host
header value. If the settings are not right, correct them and restart the
Default Web Site.
3. Please follow the steps below to check whether the Monitoring Virtual
Directory in IIS is OK.
a. Run inetmgr.
b. Go to Default Web Site/Monitoring.
c. Right click Backup and click Properties.
d. Under "Virtual Directory" tab, you're pointing to C:\Inetpub\
Monitoring. And you're using DefaultAppPool.
e. Under Documents tab, the order of the default content page is
Default.htm; Default.asp; index.htm; iisstart.htm; Default.aspx.
f. Under "Directory Security" tab, click Edit under Authentication and
access control.
g. Make sure that Integrated Windows authentication has been checked.
Note: Please do the same check of the backup Virtual Directory.
4. Also I want to confirm that you backup the server by running the Backup
Wizard to schedule the backups. If this is your case, this problem can be
caused by the task "Back Up Small Business Server" is deleted manually from
Scheduled Tasks, if you use schedule backup which is created by backup
wizard.
To resolve this issue, please re-schedule the backup task. If you want SBS
to backup the server, please re-run Backup Configuration Wizard (Server
Management -> Backup -> Configure Backup) and select "Change existing
backup settings" to let the wizard recreate the task. If you do not want
SBS to backup the server, please select "Do not use Small Business Server
backup".
In addition, you can also correct this by changing the following reg key.
Key name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\Backup\
Key Value: Backup Configuration
Key Data: it should be "1" originally. Please change it to "2"
After the changing, please reopen your backup snap-in and re-schedule the
backup task again.
If the issue still occurs, I would suggest you do the following steps to
reinstall the SBS Monitoring component:
a. Uninstall monitoring using SBS integrated setup.
b. Go to IIS Default Website, delete Monitoring.
c. Rename Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Monitoring
to Monitoring.old.
d. Disable any third party applications and services.
e. Rerun SBS integrated setup to install Monitoring.
If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
kindly help me collect some information for further investigation:
1. Please capture screenshots on the Monitoring & Reporting and Backup info
in server management, then send the pictures to me at v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
2. Gather IIS Metabase:
1) Download the IIS Resource Kit tools from the following page:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=56FC92EE-A71A-4C73-
B628-ADE629C89499&displaylang=en
2) Install it, run MBExplorer (Metabase Explorer)
3) Right click the "LM" node and choose "Export to file".
4) Specify a file name, specify the password and finish the export.
5) Send the file and the password to v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
3. Please send me the Network MPS report.
a. Visit
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE. to download the file.
b. Run the MPSRPT_NETWORK.EXE on the server box.
c. Wait for 10~15 minutes.
d. Open Windows explorer, navigate to
%SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\Network\Reports\cab\
e. Send the .cab file directly to me
Hope these steps will give you some help.
Thanks and have a nice day!
Best regards,
Terence Liu(MSFT)

| We've had this problem for some months now and our IT Consultant has been
| unable to come up with a solution - hence posting here to hopefully get
some
| help with it. (As a small company we don't have a dedicated IT Team, and
| whilst I know quite a bit of IT my server knowledge is still limited so
| please bear with me!)
|
| We're running Windows Small Business Server 2003
| From Server Management, clicking on Backup results in the following
message
| being displayed, where the backup details should be:
| The page cannot be found
| HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found.
| Internet Information Services (IIS)
|
| I've done various searches on the internet trying to find a solution, but
| they all seem to be slightly different problems to the one I have. I've
| looked at kb article 842693 (You receive a “HTTP 400 - Bad Request"
error
| message when you try to use the Monitoring and Reporting snap-in or the
| Backup snap-in on a Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer)
| As a result of the article I checked to make sure that the default
website
| had nothing in the host header value box (it didn't).
|
| Our company website works fine, all other connections to the internet
have
| no problems, emails are coming and going. The only other item that isn't
| working is the Monitoring & Reporting part of server management (with a
| different error message) but for now I'd like to get the backup view
working.
|
| I just installed the Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (32-bit x86) and
had
| hoped it may fix the problem but unfortunately not. Any ideas on
something
| fairly simple to get it back up and running?
