Hello Rod,
Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.
To shortening WSS address, as a work ground, you can try the following:
1. Open IIS and migrate to Servername\WebSites\Default Web Site.
2. Right click Default Web Site and click New/Virtual Directory.
3. Click Next and input Alias: BWpp.
4. Input the path c:\ BWpp and click Next.
5. Click Next to finish the wizard.
6. Right click BWpp virtual directory under Default Web Site and select
Properties.
7. On the Virtual Directory tab, select A redirection to a URL.
8. Input
http://newk:15816/sites/PPJobs/default.aspx in the box of Redirect to.
9. Click OK.
Now when you visit http://servername/ BWpp the website will be redirect to
http://newk:15816/sites/PPJobs/default.aspx
Hope the information helps.
If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Best regards,
Robert Li(MSFT)

<g'day,
<
<I just installed WSS 3, and it has given the address:
<for my first page, newk is our server, ppjobs is the site i setup.
<
<We have setup using headers and DNS hosts, to make Http://BWpp/ go to
<http://newk:15816/
<
<but I want to then maybe put a default.aspx file there and i can link to
<certain subsites myself, or make it redirect to the long address i listed
<above. However in IIS there is not even a default.aspx as it is, or a
/sites
<folder, this is blowing my mind - but I realise sharepoint stores stuff in
<lists, but how does it know what pages are what?
<
<how do I make a http://bwpp/default.aspx of my own? i tried putting it in
<the iis folder but it didnt work.
<
<Thanks,
<sorry if I asked any dumb questions, very new to this and getting my head
<around it all is difficult.
