Re: Replace SBS2003 cost with Server Std.

Primary reason is a SBS server can only be one on the network and

But without SBS, you still can't replicate some things (Exchange mailboxes,
for example)

If the server is down, all is down.

That's true without SBS as well, depending on how you're doing your "load
balancing" :)

In an SBS domain, you can have additional DCs/GCs/DNS/WINS/DHCP boxes,
additional file servers (and use DFS), even Exchange & SQL servers. You
can't remove stuff from the SBS box to install it on another Windows server,
but that's not what you're asking, I think.

It'll take many $$$ to do an Exchange cluster, separate servers for
RAS, SQL, Sharepoint(?).

Yep. And Exchange clusters rarely do what people think they will. An
Exchange cluster is still sharing disk, which is more likely to be your
point of failure than, say, a motherboard. I don't like clusters.

I think people are just trying to impress others with the number of
servers they can run.

Could be.

It has been propsoed that we abandon SBS to go with Server2003.
For my argument,
What is the approx. cost to

You'll need to price it all out individually from your reseller. You
can buy retail/box products, or OEM products (depending on
hardware), you can use the Open License Program, etc.

I suggest you chat with whomever is suggesting this migration to
find out why they're suggesting it. It's much easier to refute
arguments when they're known!

replace all that comes with SBS to have
Server Std domain.
Server

For the above, W2003 Standard

Exchange

For the above, Exchange 2003 or 2007 Standard

Outlook (?)

May be included w/Exchange, may not be.

VPN

RRAS is part of W2003 server....but I'd use a hardare-based solution
of some sort

RWW

Not available outside of SBS

Sharepoint

WSS is a free download.

What else?

Health Monitor?
SQL, if you use it.
