actually, I'm re-reading the thread. Don't worry about the forward
zone info, in an earlier post you state:

_msdcs.xxx.local running
xxx.local running

that'll do.

What might give a little insight is;

nslookup

set type=soa

xxx.co.uk

....and see if you get the appropriate information (obviously xxx is
disguised )

while I think of it.

in the DNS console on the SBS, forward lookup zones, what's listed?

BTW: Have you checked the hosts file on the SBS? It doesn't have
entries for the .co.uk does it?

"SuperGumby [SBS MVP]" <not@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message

yep, valid.

or better yet, let's take the ISP out of the equation altogether,
remove the 'forwarders' from DNS and use root hints.

"Claus" <cjobes@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message

There are 2 possible reasons for your problem. Either your DNS
thinks it is responsible for resolving queries for xxx.co.uk or
the ISP DNS server that you have entered under the Forwarder tab
doesn't have a record for xxx.co.uk.

You can test the second possibility by connecting a workstation to
your ISP router and configure it with the same DNS entries you
have on your SBS DNS under the Forwarder tab. Then do a ping to
www.xxx.co.uk and see if you get a response IP. If you get the
correct IP you know that the problem is on your SBS.

Let us know what the result is.

Thank you Claus

I did take on board that you said it was a temporary work around
but I do
thank you for your valuable advice.
I am now hoping that SuperGumby and yourself can help me to sort
the real
problem. I have acted on the directions of SG and posted the
results as he
asked so hopefully some valuable gems will be floating my way
shortly. "Claus" wrote:

SG is right and I mentioned it in my post. This is strictly a
workaround and
you do need to find out where the problem is in your DNS.

As to cp.xxx.co.uk, just add another entry in your hosts file
referencing
the correct IP.

Hello SuperGumby
Thankyou for taking up my case as well the more the merrier I
hope. Well I removed the entry from my hosts file and issued a
ping command to
both
cp.xxx.co.uk
www.xxx.co.uk
and for both requests I recieved the following message:

"ping request could not find host xxx please check the name and
try again"

However if I ping the IP address of www.xxx.co.uk I do get a
reply from
all
4 packets.

"SuperGumby [SBS MVP]" wrote:

using a hosts file is 'masking' rather than fixing the problem.

Remove the hosts info.
Ping www.xxx.co.uk, is the ip returned on the local LAN or
external?
Ping cp.xxx.co.uk, same question.

OK hosts file work arround progress report

I found out the ip of my .co.uk so I put this into the hosts
file of
the
server and refferenced it to www.xxx.co.uk
Bingo my web browser can now see www.xxx.co.uk when typed into
the
address
bar.
Also when I ping www.xxx.co.uk I now get a reply that is
prefixed with
the
IP address for all four packets.
Remaining problems. I still cant access http://cp.xxx.co.uk
from the
same
browser although I know this is on a different IP address.
I still cant reach any of the xxx.co.uk from all the other
computers on
the
network only from the server which I changed the hosts file
for. Having been told this is a temporary measure do the
results I now have
help
us to resolve the issue with DNS. Indeed is it even a DNS
issue. "leigh martin" wrote:

Claus I havent added the entry to my hosts file yet. I
understand that
I
will
need to type in xxx.co.uk and a couple of spaces and then
the IP address.
The
problem is I dont know what IP address to use. Is it one from
the
company
that is hosting my .co.uk ?
I am using windows SBS2003 basic straight out of the OEM box
and installed
on a Dell Poweredge server.
This is so frustrating cos I just know there is a simple
solution.
Thanks for your help Im sorry I forgot to mention my 2 nic
adventure.

"Claus" wrote:

Did you add the entry in your hosts file? Were you able to

The fact that this stopped working after you tried to add a
second
NIC
is an
important hint that you failed to mention earlier. Are you
running
Premium
with ISA?

Thankyou Claus

Now then how do I set about sorting my DNS set up. I dont
think
waiting
for
propagation is an issue cos we been using the same outside
agent
for
months
now and it used to work until I tried to switch the server
onto
two
nics
and
ran the internet connection wizzard. (thats another story
all
together it
didnt work and I switched back to one nic. I expect I will
be
asking
about
that another time.) Can someone walk me through the
diagnostic and
help me
to
understand what is going on with DNS so that I can resolve
this
issue.
Remember I dont have any entries in my forward look up that
refer
to
xxx.co.uk they are both refering to xxx.local.
Also when I ping xxx.co.uk the host could not be found.
Why is my DNS trying to resolve all xxx queries .co.uk
internaly.
Why
cant
the SBS box understand it needs to look out of itself to
resolve
xxx.co.uk
requests.

"Claus" wrote:

Even though SG is right and I did misread your post, you
can do a
quick
fix
until you find the problem in the DNS. Navigate to your
hosts
file
on the
server (windows/system32/drivers/etc) and add a record for
www.yourdomain.co.uk pointing to the external address. If
I'm not
mistaken,
your server will check the hosts file first and you should
be
able
to get
to
your website.

But this is just a temp fix. You need to find out where
the DNS
problem
is.

My request for help is rather urgent and I am now even
more

than

"leigh martin" wrote:

I am sure a previous operator had this working so

Would I be better off deleting all DNS server settings
and
starting
again,
is that even possible? The trouble is I am looking at
the DNS
settings,
foward look up zones ect. and I dont know what they
should be.
In
my
ignorance I feel Claus was right but you all dissagree.
If it helps I cannot find any instances of xxx.co.uk in
any
part
of
the
DNS
settings. Is this correct or is something missing.

"SuperGumby [SBS MVP]" wrote:

Wrong.

The OP has probably at some earlier time created a
pointer
to
his
.co.uk
address, he needs to remove any such pointer and allow
DNS
to
operate
normally.

It _could_ just be a propogation thing. The web
hosting
service
may
have
only recently taken control of the DNS zone and the
changes
need
time
to
propogate.

"Claus" <cjobes@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message
news:OaxMCy9xHHA.1204@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
You are correct. You need to set up a zone for
"yourdomain.co.uk"
and
then
create an A record for CP, pointing at the static
IP.

Hello to all you boffins
I have an SBS2003 server on 1 nic and a adsl router
which
lets
all
clients
and the server browse the internet no problem.
except
one!
(xxx
represents
the name of my domain). Recently an outside agent
began
hosting
my
web
page
and email service, but i cannot connect to my
.co.uk on
their
servers.
I cannot browse to cp.xxx.co.uk or
http://cp.xxx.co.uk
from
any
machines
on
my xxx.local domain. I can do this from any
external
machine
not
on
the
xxx.local domain.
I can get to these places from my xxx.local domain
if I
use
ip
addresses.
I think it has to do with DNS.
I think I need to set up a new forward look up zone
so
that
the
SBS2003
box
knows to resolve xxx.co.uk requests externally.
Please can some body direct me to a resource that
will
teach
me
how
to do
this or explain in this thread how to do it or what
to do
if
my
assumptions
above are wrong
