OK hosts file work arround progress report

I found out the ip of my .co.uk so I put this into the hosts file of the
server and refferenced it to www.xxx.co.uk
Bingo my web browser can now see www.xxx.co.uk when typed into the address
bar.
Also when I ping www.xxx.co.uk I now get a reply that is prefixed with the
IP address for all four packets.
Remaining problems. I still cant access http://cp.xxx.co.uk from the same
browser although I know this is on a different IP address.
I still cant reach any of the xxx.co.uk from all the other computers on the
network only from the server which I changed the hosts file for.
Having been told this is a temporary measure do the results I now have help
us to resolve the issue with DNS. Indeed is it even a DNS issue.

important hint that you failed to mention earlier. Are you running Premium

Now then how do I set about sorting my DNS set up. I dont think waiting

propagation is an issue cos we been using the same outside agent for
months
now and it used to work until I tried to switch the server onto two nics

ran the internet connection wizzard. (thats another story all together it
didnt work and I switched back to one nic. I expect I will be asking about

Remember I dont have any entries in my forward look up that refer to
xxx.co.uk they are both refering to xxx.local.
Also when I ping xxx.co.uk the host could not be found.
Why is my DNS trying to resolve all xxx queries .co.uk internaly. Why cant
the SBS box understand it needs to look out of itself to resolve xxx.co.uk
requests.

address, he needs to remove any such pointer and allow DNS to

It _could_ just be a propogation thing. The web hosting service may
have
only recently taken control of the DNS zone and the changes need
time

propogate.

You are correct. You need to set up a zone for "yourdomain.co.uk"
and
then
create an A record for CP, pointing at the static IP.

I have an SBS2003 server on 1 nic and a adsl router which lets

and the server browse the internet no problem. except one! (xxx

the name of my domain). Recently an outside agent began hosting

and email service, but i cannot connect to my .co.uk on their
servers.
I cannot browse to cp.xxx.co.uk or http://cp.xxx.co.uk from any
machines
on
my xxx.local domain. I can do this from any external machine not
on
the
xxx.local domain.
I can get to these places from my xxx.local domain if I use ip
addresses.
I think it has to do with DNS.
I think I need to set up a new forward look up zone so that the
SBS2003
box
knows to resolve xxx.co.uk requests externally.
Please can some body direct me to a resource that will teach me
how
to do
this or explain in this thread how to do it or what to do if my
assumptions
above are wrong
