RE: Connecting Mac 10.4.1 to SBS 2k3 Network

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi Fred,

I am not sure if you have followed the below white paper. If so, it will
tell you how to configure the connectivity for your Mac OS...

Connecting Macintosh OS X 10.3 and Higher Clients to a Windows Small
Business Server 2003 Network
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServerSolutions/SBS/en/library/de06b650
-c674-4acf-a57c-d8e6dfe6e5261033.mspx?mfr=true

You could also use the following steps to make sure SMB is disabled on the
SBS server.

A. On the SBS server, run "gpmc.msc" and make sure the following policies
(10 in total) are all 'Disable' (instead of 'Not defined') in BOTH 'Default
Domain Security Policy' and 'Default Domain Controller Security Policy':

NOTE: The polices are under 'Windows Settings' -> 'Security Settings' ->
'Local Policies' -> 'Security Options'.

1) Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications (always):
Disabled
2) Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications (if server
agrees): Disabled
3) Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (always):
Disabled
4) Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (if client
agrees): Disabled
5) Network security: LAN Manager authentication level: Send LM & NTLM - use
NTLMv2 session security if negotiated

B. Restart the SBS server.

C. Make sure the value of the following keys are all '0' on the SBS server

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
\enablesecuritysignature
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters
\requiresecuritysignature
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation\param
eters\enablesecuritysignature
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation\param
eters\requiresecuritysignature

Hope that helps.

| Hi,
|
| We have a Mac laptop, running OS 10.4.1, that we'd like to be able to
| connect to our SBS 2k3 network to access file shares on the server.
Don't
| need to join the domain, just connect in workgroup mode for inet and file
| access.
|
| The mac can see the server, but attempting to connect to shares results
in
| an SMB error message following attempted logon via either user or admin
| username and password.
|
| I have followed the directions in one of the SBS books respecting
creating a
| new GPO disabling SMB digital signing, elevated it above default GPO, and
| forced the gpupdgae. No joy connecting from the laptop.
|
| Don't know if I need to install any utility or software on the mac. Am
| looking for a step-by-step on this matter, if anyone can help or point me
to
| an available resource.
|
| TIA,
|
| Fred Orcutt
