COM3 normally piggybacks on COM1. See if you can set up the COM port in
the BIOS of the server to allow traffic on COM1 and COM3.

Crud, I've only got one COM port -- COM 1.

What port are you selecting to use in Hyperterminal? The Faxmodem may
be using COM1, so try COM3 to talk to the switch.

I followed your suggested steps, no change - same result. CAB file
created and emailed as requested.

Hello Mike,
Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.
From your description, I know that when you use HyperTerminal to talk
to
your Modem, you get a message saying some other service is using the
port.
Please let me know the following to make the situation more clearly?
1. Why do you use HyperTerminal to connect the fax modem?
2. Does the fax works fine sending and receiving fax?
3. Where do the users use Outlook, from Internet or LAN?
4. How do the problematic Outlook users visit SBS server, via Rpc over
http
or VPN?
5. What important change did you make before the problem first
occurred?
Based on my experience, I'd like to give you the following
suggestions:
Step 1: The problem may be caused by the fax modem. Please check if
the fax
modem is in HCL list.
More info:
http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/
Step 2: Check if there is port conflict for the fax modem.
1. Right click My Computer and select properties.
2. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manger.
3. Check the fax modem, can you see any conflict?
Step 3: Install the latest fax modem drive and try again.
Step 4: Please make a clean boot to make sure the problem is not
caused
third party software:
1. Click Start->Run...->type msconfig and press Enter.
2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and
Disable
All third party Services.
3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items.
4. Click OK and choose Restart.
5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs.
6. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root
cause
of this issue.
Step 5: I noticed you installed Windows 2003 SP2, something unexpected
may
be caused by RSS. Please disable it and try again.
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, click DWORD Value, and then type
EnableRSS .
4. Double-click EnableRSS, type 0 , and then click OK.
5. Exit Registry Editor.

15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE
2) Run the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.exe on the server box.
3) Wait for 10~15 minutes.
4) Open Windows explorer, navigate to
%SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\cab\
5) Send the .cab file to v-robeli@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with subject:
