Re: SBS 2003 R2 can it be used as a workgroup server

Hi,

I'm looking into Raid controllers this morning. These servers are rather old
Intel SC5000/SBT 2 motherboard systems will dual Xeon 1 GH processers. They
work well for the things that this small business is doing. I'm just
concerned about buying a compatible controller.

Another issue is that I made the big mistake of allowing windows SBS 2003 to
activate the copy that I installed. I did it both times I tried to install
the OS. Do you know what the ramifications of this is if I go to sell the
2003 SBS R2 as used but it has been activated. Will Microsoft let someone
else activate the product when they install it on their system? I thought
that the activation tied the copy of the software to the hardware
configuration. You can continue to reinstall and activate the product as many
times as you want on the same hardware configuration without problems. Also
you can make some hardware changes and still have no problems activating
based on some formula that Microsoft has. Do you think the if I sold the
copy, would someone be able to activate it sucessfully? They would be the
legal owner of the product and pocess the CDs and key. As long as I don't
have the product installed, it should be legal. It's just the activation
issue. I'm basing this information on how I understand Windows XP to work. I
am pretty familar with XP. In fact, I had originally planned to use XP until
I found out about the lack of software raid support

Thanks, It would make me feel a little better if I could at least sell the
product legally and the new owner have no issues activating.

Hi,

Yes we actual bought XP PRo and had plans to use it instead. That is until I
found out that it doesn't support software mirroring or Raid-5. I didn't open
the box so we returned it instead. Thats when we selected SBS 2003 SP2. It
really isn't clear at all from the box or Microsoft that it must run AD and
and server as a domain controller. I searched the microsoft website and the
internet but could not find any info on my situation today.

We do have a little firefly USB external drive that is connected to the
server and we have automated backups to the drive each night. I just wanted
the fault tolerence and windows 2000 server di that well enough for our
situation. Now I'm out 629.00 for the SBS 2003 server R2 and have to look
into hardware raid.

The funny thing is, it looks like straight 2003 server would do what I need
it to do. Obviously some version of 2003 server allows this or they wouldn't
have the workgroup displayed on the computer name/change window. Even if it
is ghosted out in SBS 2003 R2

Frustrated to say the least.

Well,
it depends. what country do you live in? if in usa, it shouldn't be
too hard to sell sbs2003 - or post in here! Maybe someone will buy it
from you.

You can take your money and get a good hardware raid controller and use
winXP. You'll probably have to hit the F6 key and install the raid
controller driver during setup. Adaptec makes very good raid
controllers by the way. It's not the only brand, but it's a very good
to use.

good luck,

Oskar

ps. You can also get a copy of winXP on ebay as well - for much less
than retail! Get them fast - by the end of 2007 winxp won't be
available anymore - monopoly must force market to use vista. I must say
it's an incredible resource pig! i installed it on a new machine - it
uses 400MB of ram at IDLE! wow! this is without virus scanning - add
that and it will only go up.
