Re: Exchange receiving but not sending emails??

Like Dave says, turn up logging for SMTP in ESM to maximum, and see what additional error information is provided.

Also, enable logging for the Default SMTP Virtual Server, Right Click | Properties.

On the General tab, click to enable logging and set the format to IIS Log File Format. Note the location of the logfile, force the queue, and then have a look at the smtp conversations in the logfile.

Also, you might try sending an email from the server using telnet.

Your ISP might be doing something funny - like not allowing you to send via DNS, rather requiring you to send via their email servers (smarthost).

MTU problems can also cause failed SMTP transmissions. You can try the 'black hole router' test.

Did you look at that eventid.net stuff? There's one in there about possible NIC driver or configuration problems, and some about xexch50.

You could try upping the SMTP logging to see if you get any useful info from that. Or see if you can get any help in microsoft.public.exchange.admin. After a day without outgoing e-mail, I'd consider calling PSS and let them sort it out.

I removed the hardware and tried...
1) a different router
2) a direct connection
...still no difference, the messages are just sitting in the queue.
There has been no reported failures in the system and the UPS has not reported any prolonged power failures.

That's pretty strange if it's all outbound messages, as opposed to all outbound to just one domain. I think I'd be looking at the hardware between the SBS and the Internet connection - the router, firewall device, or whatever. I'd start by completely removing it to see if that works, and if so, I'd suspect a failure rather than a configuration error. After all, it's pretty unlikely that the configuration changed itself (not that it couldn't have reset in a power failure or something).

I would definitely rule out hardware before messing with the SBS too much, especially if there are no errors showing up in the application log. Exchange is pretty chatty when something's wrong, and the configuration on the SBS didn't change itself either.

Dave it just says "The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt" - not extremely helpful.

When you view the queue that contains the messages, does it say anything useful at the bottom of the screen under "additional queue information?"

(I'm not in front of a server but that's close to the correct wording).

Ok so i have had an SBS running now on full exchange email for about 6months with absolutely no problems. All of a sudden yesterday afternoon all outbound email is stuck in a queue "retrying" to be sent out."The remote serevr did not respond to a connection attempt" is what the queue is saying. There is no NDR's in the queue as that is turned off. There is a message in the event viewer saying...

EventID: 7010
Description: ...sent a "xexch50" command SMTP responded with "504 Need to authenticate first". The full command sent was "xexch50 1020 2". This will probably cause the connection to fail.

All email seems to be coming in without a problem, however, no email is going out - just sitting in the queue (email is routed via DNS).

HELP!
