Re: can't permanently select IE7 to open shortcut

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Hi Gary,

Thank for positing in our newsgroup.

From your description, I know that IE doesn't associate with ASP short cut.
If I am off-base, please don't hesitate to let me know.

I made the following same test as you did. The problem cannot be
reproduced. So maybe that caused by IDATA.ASP short cut itself.

1. Create a short cut on desktop for c:\inetpub\wwwroot\iisstart.asp.
2. Double click iisstart.asp shortcut on desktop.
3. Check Select the program from the list.
4. Select IE and check Always use the selected program to open with this
kind of file.
5. Now I double click iisstart.asp shortcut and this is successfully.

Please take the following steps to narrow down this issue:

Step 1: Double click IDATA.ASP instead of its shortcut, will the same issue
reoccur?

Step 2: Double click another asp file (such as
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\iisstart.asp), what the result?

Step 3: Since the problem occurs after you removed Firefox, please reset IE
to default and check again. You can see the steps in the following KB:

923737 How to use Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;923737

Step 4: Check the file association in Explorer.

1. Open Windows Explorer.
2. Click Tools/Folders/File Type.
3. Click Extensions ASP and click Change.
4. Check Select the program from the list.
5. Select IE and check Always use the selected program to open with this
kind of file.

Step 5: Log on with a deferent user account, will the same issue reoccur?

Please try my suggestions and let me know the result.

If the problem persists, please zip and send me a sample of ASP file and I
need to test on my side.

Please send the information to v-robeli@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with subject:
39853631-can't permanently select IE7 to open shortcut.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)
