Re: Internet Connection Wizzard

SP2 has quite a few problems on the SBS box.
Have a look here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555912
There are also some other issues. One of the most important tasks that you
need to do is to update the drivers for your NICs.

Thanks for getting back to me

Yes SP2 installed
AD was backed up before ISA was installed.
ISA will be removed tomorrow night - doing tests on my R2 server today.
But
so far I can't replicate the problem!!
When you open the DHCP console from either the administrative tools or my
computer manage you get the same display unable to find DHCP server error
remote procedure call failed.

The problem is not causing my client any issues other than a message when
they add or change users in the AD - complains about the GC not being
available but it does the change or addition anyway!!

My client is over 3hrs drive away so doing everything remote but removing
ISA i will need to be on site!

Cheers Pete

Something went very wrong. At this point I would uninstall the ISA and
see
if you get things back. Did you install W2K3 SP2?
I'm worried about your AD problems and I hope you have good backups.

You also didn't answer my question if you see the DHCP server when you
right-click on MyComputer and select "manage".

Hi,

Back on the case!!

Been away on hols for a couple of weeks and now having another go!!

Still can't get the ICW to run - fails on the network section.

DHCP server is running and issuing ip addresses but when you run the
dchp
mmc you get
Cannot find the DHCP server
The dhcop server you specified cannot be
located....................................
the remote procedure call failed.

Also from server management if you go to users it states there are no
items
to show in this view.

i have run dcdiag and netdiag and get the follwing errors.

DCDIAG
[SBS-xyz] Directory Binding Error 1726:
Win32 Error 1726
This may limit some of the tests that can be performed.
[SBS-xyz] DsBindWithSpnEx() failed with error 1726,
Win32 Error 1726.
......................... SBS-xyz failed test Connectivity

NETDIAG
DC list test . . . . . . . . . . . : Failed
[WARNING] Cannot call DsBind to SBS-xyz.xyz.local (192.168.34.1).
[RPC_S_CALL_FAILED]

If you go to AD and open the user and computers mmc when you try and
connect
to a domain controller you get the following error - no domain
controllers
in
the list.

This is the only server on site - Windows SBS 2003 R2 - was a clean
install
but using the DELL broadcomm cards however these gave problems with ISA
2004
- with 3com cards installed everything else now OK.

Just found that the DHCP server on the SBS machine is down - service
is
started but the DHCP MMC states cannot find DHCP server!!!

Claus,

Many thanks for the info about RPC - I'll wait and see if that
cures
the
problem with Exchange. - many thanks

I have been looking at the server and windows 2003 SP2 was not
installed - i
have been speaking to Dell about the problems with Broadcom cards
and
they
need SP2 to function correctly. The last update to SP2 failed -
maybe
that's
why we are having funny problems.

You need to disable strict RPC in the ISA.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/isa/2004/help/SRSP1_H_EnforceRPCAD.mspx?mfr=true

Beside this you also need to disable it under "Filters" and the
SBS
Internet
access rule.

As to the failing of the CEICW, post an ipconfic /all from the
server.

My client has a new sbs2003R2 installation on a Dell 1900
server.
When it
came it was pre-configured to SBS without the premium options
installed.
Every thing was working fine until ISA 2004 was installed
companyweb
and
connectcomputer stopped working - AH! Remembered from last year
problems
with
Broadcom and SBS2003R2 replaced with 3com cards and everything
came
up no
problems.

But ever since there has been a series of events logged and
today
I
have
tried to run the internet connection wizard and it fails in the
network
configuration stage. With this logged in event log

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1053
Date: 21/06/2007
Time: 15:03:04
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: SBS-XYZ
Description:
Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The remote
procedure
call failed. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

No other errors are posted except one in the DNS log:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: DNS
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7062
Date: 21/06/2007
Time: 13:59:02
User: N/A
Computer: SBS-XYZ
Description:
The DNS server encountered a packet addressed to itself on IP
address
192.168.34.1. The packet is for the DNS name
"104.9.102.66.in-addr.arpa.".
The packet will be discarded. This condition usually indicates
a
configuration error.

Check the following areas for possible self-send configuration
errors:
1) Forwarders list. (DNS servers should not forward to
themselves).
2) Master lists of secondary zones.
3) Notify lists of primary zones.
4) Delegations of subzones. Must not contain NS record for
this
DNS
server unless subzone is also on this server.
5) Root hints.

Example of self-delegation:
-> This DNS server dns1.example.microsoft.com is the primary
for
the
zone
example.microsoft.com.
-> The example.microsoft.com zone contains a delegation of
bar.example.microsoft.com to dns1.example.microsoft.com,
(bar.example.microsoft.com NS dns1.example.microsoft.com)
-> BUT the bar.example.microsoft.com zone is NOT on this
server.

Note, you should make this delegation check (with nslookup or
DNS
manager)
both on this DNS server and on the server(s) you delegated the
subzone to.
It
is possible that the delegation was done correctly, but that
the
primary
DNS
for the subzone, has any incorrect NS record pointing back at
this
server.
If
this incorrect NS record is cached at this server, then the
self-send
could
result. If found, the subzone DNS server admin should remove
the
offending
NS record.

You can use the DNS server debug logging facility to track down
the
cause
of
this problem.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
