Re: Unable access ftp site

I had an exeption for port 21 in the firewall. It would not work that was why
I turned off the firewall. Then it worked machine to machine. I had spoken to
my ISP the other day and had them setup the A record for me. The FTP site
worked when it was on the SBS server, no problem. The problem is when I move
it to the "outsidemachine" that I am unable to connect to the ftp site via
ftp://ftp.mycompany.com/. The router is set to forward port 21 to the
192.168.0.17 address which is the XP Pro "outsidemachine". I can ping to the
192.168.0.17 machine from my SBS server as well as any machine connected
directly to the router. I have checked "Super DNS" and the A record exists
for the ftp site with the correct IP address. Where do I need to look now?
Again thanks for your assistance.

Since you managed to connect when you turned off the firewall, the issue is.
the firewall. As I posted earlier you should have an exception to the
firewall for port 21.
As far as accessing the site using ftp://ftp.mycompany.com, you'll need an A
record that points to the external address of your server. That would be
the address that your router gets when connects to the ISP (assuming you are
using NAT). If you have a static IP Address, create a DNS record at the ISP
or any other DNS provider that maps the ftp.mycompany.com to that address.
In the router, forward requests for port 21 to 192.168.0.17 , the address
of the XP box that run the ftp server

Tried it and the second machine would not connect via
ftp://outsidemachine.
Even took them off the router and placed them on a hub by them selves
still
not able to connect. I reinstalled IIS on the "outsidemachine" and still
was
unable to connect. turned off the firewall completely and then was able to
connect via ftp://outsidemachine. Reconnected the two machines to the
router
made sure they were not in the same workgroup and tried
ftp://outsidemachine
and it connected but when I went to ftp://ftp.mycompany.com/ still not
able
to connect. What now?

That name has a lot to do with it. If you are "calling" a computer with
the
wrong name the computer won't answer.
First you need to check if the ftp service is working properly. If the
computer name is "outsidemachine" and it belongs to a workgroup, add
another
XP computer (if you have) in the same workgroup, open IE from that
computer
and type: ftp://outsidemachine . Assuming the firewall on
"outsidemachine"
has excemptions for port 21, you should get a reply and access to the ftp
server. If you do, the ftp service is setup properly and now we are
dealing
with DNS issues.
Let me know if by doing what I suggested works.

Did as you suggested. No response same as before. It times out with no
explination. ? does the name of the computer have any bearing on this?
example ftp site address is "ftp.ourcompany.com" but the name of the
perimeter machine is "outside machine" set up on a workgroup called
"Workgroup". ?Do I need to set a seperate DMZ up on the router (router
address 192.168.0.1 default DMZ server on router is 192.168.0.0,
connections
to SBS2k3 192.168.0.25, to XP Pro machine 192.168.0.17 port 20 and 21
forwarded to 192.168.0.17)? Again thanks for the assistance.

This seems to be an XP Pro issue related, most probably, to firewall.
Add
an exception to the firewall in XP for port 21. Then connect a
separate
computer in the DMZN and try to access the site (this step is to make
sure
that there is only one firewall between the client and the server).
See if that works

Good day all,
I hope this is in the correct area. I have ans SBS2k3 premium server
running
ISA2004, SQL, Exchange and so on. We have a static IP address and a
FQDN.
I
am wanting to set up an ftp site on a perimeter machine and am
having
trouble. I can get the site set up on my SBS server and access it
fine
from
inside and outside, but when I set it up on the perimeter machine I
am
unable
to access it at all. the perimeter machine is running XP Pro with
IIS
installed and I have configured the FTP site according to the rules.
I
have
set the router to redirect the FTP request on port 21 to the
perimeter
machine I can ping the perimeter machine from my server but I cannot
access
the FTP site from anywhere. Can anyone give me direction on this?
Thanks
in
advance.
