Still not sure where the "loopback" connector came from, but...
You might want to check out Andy's SBS 2003 install walkthroughs at:

One NIC with a hardware router to the internet.
This SBS system was working correctly for about a month. I am not sure
what
messed it up. I guess I should keep better notes about what I add and in
what order.
I guess I might as well remove the clients (only three) from the domain
and
reinstall the server. I can't boot it the way it is, anyway. I didn't
find
anything in the KB yet.
I would appreciate any tips about what should be installed, and in what
order.

It looks like your NIC configuration is incorrect for a 2 NIC scenario.
Is
there a router involved?
2 NICs + router Network Configuration (see diagram)
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Articles/tabid/266/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/74/Two-Nics-a-dynamic-IP-address-ISA-and-a-router.aspx
Also, is the loopback connector installed instead of a real NIC?
Are you at a point where you can reinstall from scratch?

Ipconfig /all showed something like:
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : Server2003
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Borg.local.
Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : loopback
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 127.0.0.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.196
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family
Gigabit
Ethernet NIC
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.196
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.10
I did the base install when I was connected through a router to the
ethernet.
Since I was not sure what order I had installed the updates, I decided
to
uninstall the updates and service pack and try re-running SBS setup
again.
Unfortunately, after uninstalling the service pack, the server
continuously
reboots. I think I something in the KB about this, so I am going to
look
for
it. I will keep you posted.

Can you post the results of an ipconfig /all for the server?
Did you complete the SBS Integrated Setup install before you updated
the
server with any MS Security updates or Service Packs?
Did you do the base install of SBS when it was connected to a live hub
or
switch only (no other workstations or Internet connections connected)?

Thanks, Mike and Rick for your input.
Turning off the Virtual Machine and re-booting the SBS did not clear
the
situation.
I had thought that DNS could be the problem so I deleted the VM from
both
the DNS and WINS databases in active-directory. This did not help
either.
I thought I might have found the solution. Somewhere in the KB,
this
forum
or the EULA, I read about not mixing the media between the dvd and
cd's
when
installing SBS. So, I did a reinstall of SBS using the suggested
method
of
selecting
"Change/Remove" on SBS in Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel.
This
seemed to work for about two days. Then the problem started again.
If I thout it would alleviate my problems, I would do a complete
fresh
install of SBS. However, I have already done this three times. I
might
just
go back to Windows 2000 server instead.
