And... the "Alternate Configuration" tab is only available if the primary
TCP/IP configuration uses DHCP to obtain an IP address automatically.

Ian G,
I tried to look into this and there wasn't anything that states an
"alternative configuration" statement on any of the screens that I can
find
in the TCP/IP section. The laptop is running a Windows XP Pro SP2 OS. Am
I
looking in the wrong place?

you can make an alternative configration on the laptop.
go to the TCP/IP properties in network connection. double click
TCP/IP.

gatway,
dns etc
Bingo!
when you login offline the laptop will use the alternative config
leaving
your office config as is.

Somewhere this issue has happened many times before. I don't know how
or what
to search for to get the answer, as I have tried Google, MS search
and now
TechNet searches. Nothing has provided an answer for my need. I hope
you all
can help me.
I have a user that has a laptop set with a workgroup that he uses at
home to
share a printer and to share files with another desktop in his home
office
via wireless. He now needs me to connect this XP PRO laptop to the
SBS 2003
domain at work. I am afaid of losing his settings for his workgroup
at home
when I finally connect him to the domain. (He is going to also use
VPN while
out on the road to connect to the office domain!)
Question: How do I make both of these worlds work together on his
laptop?
[BTW - did I mention that this is my boss, the owner of the company,
the guy
who signs my paycheck!] Gulp!
