In article <eQMwRj4vHHA.2004@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>,
quadrantcomputerNOSPAM@xxxxxxxxxxx says...
Hi All
We have a client running SBS 2003 Premium with SQL Server 2000, which
supports a large membership database (this site was upgraded from SBS 2000.)
The boss asked us whether, using a separate ADSL service, and running a
separate web server on the Windows Server 2003 platform, they could host a
web site for the membership which could use the LAN's SQL Server? I think
they envisage the membership updating their own records & etc.
If we put a second NIC in the webserver, we could access the webserver from
the LAN... but...my questions are:
(1) What are the security implications for this approach?
(2) What would be the SQL Licensing position?
(3) Is there a better way?
Thanks in advance for any and all responses.
SBS is not licenses to allow any type of "Membership" lookup, you can't
write an application (web) that looks up users ID's, Names, etc in order
to provide authentication with your application. If your member base is
Anonymous then you're good, if they EVER authenticate (even just a
lookup of a web user/password in a table) then that would violate the
SBS licensing. We just went through this with a doctors office and MS
Licensing - the doc wanted Patients to be able to connect to the web
application and see their records - the vendor said SQL CPU licenses, I
suggested SBS 2003 Prem - MS said that "Authentication by ANY MEANS" and
a web app that looks up users in a table would be "Authentication by Any
Means", well......
The rest of your question doesn't need answered as SBS is not a valid
host for you, based on licensing, so I will stop here.
