Many, many Windows applications still require administrator rights,
which causes severe problems for those of us who want to revoke
workstation administrator rights from our end users. With respect to
software deployment, the only real answers involve throwing time or
money at the problem: if necessary, repackage the installer as an MSI
or a ZAP, then push it out using group policies; or script the
installer and push it out using some in-the-background installer like
SMS (foreground installs, like with GPO or login-script-based
solutions, are very problematic when you're attempting to support
remote or mobile users). http://www.appdeploy.com/ is your friend.
If you're a cheapskate, you'll also want to install WiX
(http://wix.sourceforge.net/), but I've heard some very good things
about AdminStudio and Wise for Windows Installer.

End user applications are a different beast. Aaron Margolis has a
great web site that discusses this in detail:
http://blogs.msdn.com/aaron_margosis/. You should read through this
site and maybe play around with LUA Buglight and MakeMeAdmin. The
other tool you can research is Sudowin, a Windows re-imagining of the
Unix "sudo" program: http://sudowin.sourceforge.net/. I like the idea
of sudowin better than RunAs, if only because I don't have to issue
two user accounts to each user (one privileged, one not)), but I must
admit that I haven't had time to test sudowin out.

Good Luck!
Matthew

Thanks Matthew,
This is what I was talking about. So I see I'm not alone in this problem! I'll take a look at some of the links you've posted.

vista works a lot like macs (or unix) in that it now prompts you for admin password or you have runas option readily available. I have both vista (for training) and mac - it sure looks like microsoft got a lot of ideas from macs. Macs have had features that vista says are 'innovative' for some years now.
