The 2900s I've put in came configured with "write through cache" and
changing to "write back cache" made all the difference in the world for
RAID 5. Of course changing that makes it quite important to have the
battery option on the raid controller as well as the server on an adequate
UPS.

Yep, same here. Every Dell PERC5 and SAS5 (RAID1) machine I have worked on
in the last couple of years have had the WB cache disabled by default. As
you say enabling it makes a world of difference. It was the difference
between ~6hrs (write through), and 1.5hrs (write back) on an Exmerge restore
at the last sbs server replacement/upgrade I did in May - can't quite
remember why I had to repeat the process (which is when I remembered to
enable the cache).. I thought it was because I forgot to raise the 2gb
mailbox limit before starting the restore, but it can't have been, 'cause
exmerge won't dump more than 2gb itself per-pst anyway.. hmm.
I believe some of these LSI cards will disable the cache again on reboot if
the BBU (battery backup unit) isn't present on the RAID card.
Scan.co.uk here in the UK stock some of the LSI BBUs, but I can't for the
life of me figure out which would be the correct one for the Dell Perc5i SAS
that I just bought to play with at home.
