Re: Fax service failing to send faxes out? Receives ok.

Gaylen,

Fax boards or external fax modems do hang once in a while. Some fax modems
are more reliable than others. When you do a search in this group you will
find some recommendations with regard to fax modems.

The only thing you can do is to monitor the outbox and reboot the modem if
it appears to hang.

As to sending from the server, you are correct that it is a permission issue
and I wouldn't change it unless you absolutely have to send faxes from the
server directly.

I came to realize last night after researching this problem a bit more
online...that some of this problem is related to the user account and
permissions of the sender. For example when I was testing from the
administrator account on the server itself the faxes would not even reach
the outbox in FSM. However, once I logged into one of the client XP
machine and tested the sending of a fax then it successfully sent out the
fax and went through just fine. Keep in mind this is only after I rebooted
the server. Before the reboot no faxes were going out successfully,
however the faxes sent from the client machines were at least reaching the
outbox on the server.

So - there are 2 issues here that I can tell thus far. One is related to
permissions which prevent the fax from even reaching the outbox queue.
The second and more important issue is related to when the fax stopped
sending successfully from an authorized user account and what caused all
faxes to then fail after this event occurred.

Hopefully this information helps while I am gathering the logs you are
requesting. As for the changes...that's what makes this issue soo
troubling. I know you won't like hearing this, but I don't recall any
changes made to the server when the faxes stopped sending this week.

Thx,
Gaylen

Hi Gaylen,

Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.

Please let me know the following information to make the situation more
clearly:

1. Do all the users or some pecific users have the problem?
2. Will the same occur when you send fax out on SBS server?
3. What important change did you made before the problem begins to occur?

First please check if the device is in the HCL list.

More information:

http://www.windowsservercatalog.com/

Please help me collect the following information for further research:

1. MPS Report

1) Download MPS report tool from:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE
2) Run the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.exe on the server box.
3) Wait for 10~15 minutes.
4) Open Windows explorer, navigate to
%SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\cab\
5) Send the .cab file to us.

2. Fax Activity log

a. Enable the full Fax event logs. Right-click the Fax snap-in and choose
'Properties'. In 'Event Reports' tab, tune all the scroll bar to the
right
site (High).
b. Click 'Activity Logging' tab, check the option boxes to enable the Fax
activity logging. Modify the log folder location to C:\ActivityLog\
(Please
create the folder first).
c. Restart the Fax service. Send several Fax's to the SBS server. After
reproducing the problem, wait for a few minutes and go back to the
server.
Collect the logs from C:\ActivityLog\

Please send the information to v-robeli@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with subject:
39738887-Fax service failing to send faxes out? Receives ok.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Best regards,

Robert Li(MSFT)
